| Olney is Damascus with more strip malls. |
If you mean whites and Trumpies - then yes, home town feel - sure I guess. Do they stress athletics over academics - absolutely. Both of them. More parents will be at the sporting events than anything else important at that school. And they are ungodly obnoxious. Neither school has great programs and their kids don't go off to good colleges. But the parents did live thru their athletic kids if that is important to you |
2020 thread. OP’s kid is an 11th grader at this point. |
Where did you find data to support this claim? |
Olney leans liberal, almost 80% vote democrat. And what a strange comment about parents attending their kids’ sporting events. Do you not attend your kids games, concerts, art shows, etc? Not any different at Sherwood. |
+1 We are at Sherwood and love it. What is wrong with parents supporting their kids at sports, music events and art shows? There is a strong parental involvement in elementary, middle and high school within the Sherwood cluster. I see that as a positive. You say they stress athletics but what are the most anticipated, and always sold out events, at Sherwood are theater shows. Our academics are also just fine. My child is thriving at school and is having a balanced and well-rounded high school experience. |
| I am not OP but one of the other posters looking for advice. Thank you Sherwood parents for the helpful info! Is there anyone from Damascus here who can weigh in? I know personally we’d be looking at Baker as a middle school so not concerned with split feeder. |
Just go a little further up 27 into Mt Airy, or even better, a few miles west into the Kemptown/Monrovia area. I actually like Damascus, but those areas are like the best of Damascus without all the trashiness you sometimes get in Damascus |
Many DCUMers ironically live in a white UMC bubble in which any white people that don't live within the white UMC bounds of Wooton or Churchill must be a racist Trumper. It's ironically a very disgusting worldview that itself is based in classism--white people who live in a more affordable area farther out must be Trumpers (though Olney is very expensive these days). It's very sad. My primary care doctor who practices in Olney went to Sherwood. My neighbors' daughter went to Northwestern. The parents of children in our daycare include a physician, dentist, psychologist, CPA, attorney, someone in high level county government, etc. There really is a very distorted view on this board. |
What sort of trashiness do you see? Could you elaborate? I do notice the houses around and north of the town center seem a little trailer-park-y. |
Yeah, there is a little bit of a trailer park vibe to certain parts. And if you go to one of their home football games, its a little redneck + ghetto going on behind the bleachers, etc. You know what I mean. Bad tattoos. People dipping and spitting into empty Mountain Dew bottle. Loud & obnoxious Moms at sporting events. Crap like that. I 100% will own being a snob here so I probably deserve to be flamed for this post, and to be fair, that element exists in Mt Airy too, but not as much. Or its just toned down a bit in Mt. Airy. But 5-10 minutes west, and you have that some country feel, but the schools (most feed into Linganore, I believe in that area) are better and you don't get that 'Joe Dirt' or 'Trailer Park Boys' vibe |
While you're off base re: Trumpers in Olney, you absolutely NAILED just about everything else about Olney. We live here, but ultimately went the private school route instead of Sherwood for precisely the reasons you outline above. Our son came up playing athletics in Olney and it was a major reason why we looked elsewhere for school/sports for our son. |
