TJ Course Assignments

Do parents reach out to counselors at TJ or is it expected for the DC to handle it?

I would understand with COVID and virtual schedules they messed up my DC schedule. But knowing this has been done before too is very disappointing

If they take Spanish over the summer, they can either repeat the course or quit the language. They make it very clear

TJ counselors and the administration appear to be going out of their way to make things difficult this year.

OP - TJ requires three language credits and DC wanted to quit after the summer spanish3. DC informed the counselor before and after completing the course. Picked the courses but was shocked and disappointed to see spanish3 on the schedule. So far they have not agreed to do anything except saying the schedules are locked down and courses are filled.

For what its worth, my just-graduated TJ kid went into TJ with 8-years of Spanish Immersion. He took the placement test and was placed into Spanish 3. It was a disaster for him, and almost caused him to drop out of TJ. He moved down to Spanish 2 in November, and went on take Spanish 3 as a sophomore and AP Spanish as a junior. Wanted to take AP Spanish Lit as a senior, but it wasn't offered. The lesson here is that chances are good that summer Spanish 3 is not going to prepare OP's kid for Spanish 4 or 5 at TJ.

+1. My kid did summer Spanish III a couple years ago. This was made very, very, clear. By then, my kid was so over the TJ Spanish department, she was fine with it.

Also, it 100% a repeat of TJ Spanish II— and actually required fewer speaking and listening skills. And Spanish III is the hardest language class at TJ. Even if they let your kid move on to AP Spanish, they wouldn’t be able to pass.

Retake the class or stop the language. And next time, follow the curriculum guidance.

PS— you kid can’t take An FCPS online or Virtual VA AP level 4th history or a summer college level class as a fourth history. They will make your kid repeat at an honors level. The rules are the rules are the rules. The history rule is just dumb. And I’ve seen lots of creative attempts to circumvent it. But I’ve never seen someone succeed. The Spanish rule makes sense because TJ Spanish is so much more advanced than standard FCPS. Your summer Spanish III student didn’t actually learn anything new and isn’t ready to progress.

I’m guessing that DC picked Spanish 3 when they registered last Feb and then took the online class and didn’t go back and tell the counselor? DCs counselor was clear during registration that you have to decide THEN whether you are taking an online or summer course. That’s why they make all the summer offerings available early. The counselors sent out phone numbers to students. Have DC call on Tuesday if email isn’t working. Hi

So I have twins (one at TJ, one at base). Base one Spanish III was easier than TJ Spanish II. TJ kid did Spanish III over the summer and was shocked at how Easy it was. He got B-/B in TJ language but easily got A online
