Average full term weight is 7 1/2 lbs.
Anything between 5 1/2 lbs and 10 lbs is considered within normal |
My daughter was 6lbs at birth and is currently wearing size 2T clothing at 10 months old. |
That is absolutely within the range of normal-sized...healthy babies can come in a big range of weights. |
My child was 6lb 3.5oz at birth (though also early), is now 3.5 years old, and we remark all the time about how big she is now because she used to just be the length of my forearm and now I can hardly carry her because there are limbs draping everywhere--is it possible that some family/friends are just remarking on your baby's tininess because they have somewhat older children and don't mean it as a judgement?
6lbs is so normal that at many of my child's early ped appointments they forgot that she had been premature and we had to remind them...so yeah, it's a totally normal weight for term babies |
DD was born at 34 weeks and she was 6lb then. The NICU doctor thought she was full term and that the dating scan was incorrect. She was not full term and spend a few weeks in the NICU. She is still a big baby, but both DH and I are tall. How tall are you and your DH, OP? |
My two sons were both born at about that weight at full term and have been in the 80th+ percentile for height most of childhood. Slim though. |
Anything between 6 and 8.5 I consider average size. Below 6lbs or pushing 9 and I think "that's a small/big baby!" Below 5lbs is "very small" to me - probably needed some time in the NICU, came very early, IUGR, something like that.
Your baby is perfect. Congrats! |
I think people often forget how little new babies are, regardless of their birth weight. My son was 6lbs 4oz at birth, and now at 3 he’s in the 90th percentile for height. Your baby is perfect. |
Op, I am shorter & smaller than you, 4’ 10” & gained 12-15lbs for 2 pregnancies. I married a tall man. Fist born full term 5 lb 8 oz, now 60 percentile height but skinny. Second born full term 6 lb 2 oz, now 95 percentile height & 50 percentile weight.
I developed gestational diabetics for both pregnancies, so I controlled my diet (per obgyn & nutritionist suggestion), and they told me both of my babies will come out 8 lb or so even with my new diet. Well, they were wrong. My families keep saying that I should not have listened to them, and eat to the full at each meal. |
My niece was born prematurely and only 4lbs at birth. She's overweight now at 8, and you would never know how tiny at birth she was. My sister (niece's mom) was 10lbs 10oz at birth, she ended up being super petite size two and only 5'0 tall as an adult. 6lbs at birth is in the normal birth weight range, don't stress about it. |
Are you Asian? |
I had a 6lb 8oz baby who is now a 17lb 15 week old. Birth weight doesn't mean much. |
OP, this is a situation where everyone is right. Your doctor is right in reassuring you that your baby is healthy and within the normal range. Your family and friends are right that he is small. 6 pounds is definitely on the small side. No need to worry. To answer your question, yes some babies are small. |
Sounds like the perfect size baby for you. |
Mine was 6 lb 1 oz, now at 13 months he is in 50th percentile for weight and 90th for height. He is a tall-ish, non-chubby baby. I am 5 ft.
Don't listen to fam and friends. They should know better than make these comments. |
