No Mask Policy?!

Does your mask do that? Mine certainly doesn't and I've never seen my kid's do that. I was out at a park in Arlington this weekend and there were cyclists and runners of all ages having zero issues as well. I'm not saying it is a top 10 experience but it definitely is not unsafe.

I guess they might be concerned about heat and breathing. I know I have a hard time breathing if I'm chasing my kids around in a mask (I do have asthma, but I don't think that's contributing much). And being outside in the heat in a mask is absolute misery.

Still, it doesn't seem like something that should be forbidden.

Yeah OP I would clarify what they mean. At our center the kids usually take them off for outside and I'm fine with that (by choosing to go back to daycare we are accepting a certain level of risk to begin with), but they can leave them on too. However, if your kid is going to wear a mask outside, you probably would need to bring a fresh one for after that time because it will probably be sweaty and gross.

But if you clarify and still don't like the policy, you're free to find a new daycare.

They did clarify that the policy was in fact no masks outside. We also do send our kids with multiple masks and a strap to keep them on them around their neck. Our children wear masks all the time so they are used to them and well versed with them. We did speak with some senior people there today and were granted an exception for our kids (yay, they are keeping other people's kids safe) and they are going to work on revisiting this an potentially gaining clarification from parents on when they want their kids to wear and not wear their masks. We have been with this school for over 5 years at this point so we would rather work with them then just peace out. But obviously I know I'm free to find a new daycare.

Honestly that sounds dangerous when playground equipment is involved. Get it snagged on something and yikes.

Ever heard of a breakaway lanyard?

Our school's concern seems to be the opposite of how often will kids have "mask breaks"?

Some of our summer camps didn't require masks for kids under 10 at all INDOORS, only 10+ (which I think is the state guideline). So the fact your daycare says no masks outdoors isn't a big deal to me.

Oh good. Not all sunglass straps have that!

the private preschool we were enrolling in has no masks INDOORS at all for kids. needless to say we're not there.. The reopening guidance seems to require that adults wear masks but not kids...

Well, you don’t get a spot over your own individualized family decision, not the county’s belief. Good luck with that.

I'd pull my kids out. The policy is ridiculous and an indication that they don't adequately understand or take measures to mitigate the risks. Yes, transmission outside is lower, but it is not zero, especially with kids playing together on the playground.

This is actually how we got our spot this year for our sons preschool. Historically, the wait list has been extremely long with very little chances of getting a spot. Knowing how in-demand this preschool is, we were shocked when we got a call a few weeks ago with an invitation to join. Thankfully, a good amount of parents decided to give up their spot and we ended up getting a spot. I think it’s fine for parents to decide what is best for their family. School, or no school, whatever works for your family is what’s best imo.

Very few daycares force children to wear masks while they are outside. Our daycare does not require masks, and we're fine with that.

The Maryland regulations for child care that were just updated say NO masks outside for children if they are social distancing.

I don't think it's age appropriate or safe to make children wear masks outside so I think it's a good policy.

For everyone who thinks being outside is foolproof let me share this useful chart:
