Do you live in a townhouse? Like/Dislike?

I live in a SFH with an large yard and am actually house hunting for a large townhouse (think SFH smashed together) because I HATE the yard. It takes up precious time away from the family and doing fun things. I want a yard I can mow with scissors.

With that said, we used to live in a TH and our neighbors had wild parties that we could clearly hear, it drove me bonkers. This time we will move into an end unit only.

We lived in a townhouse in Parkfairfax for 4 years, and heard everything our neighbors did. It was an end unit, but still pretty bad.

Definitely make sure you're well-insulated from sounds if you think that'll bug you.

We're in a brick townhouse that was built in '68. This thing is solid--we hear nothing of our neighbors, and they hear nothing of us.

We live in a townhouse built in 1995 and have never heard our neighbors through the walls (even when they had parties). Noise has never been an issue for us. I would caution, however, that the maintence on a townhouse is not very different from a single family home. Aside from the lack of yard work, you will have issues with the roof, plumbing, electrical, etc. It is way more high maintenance than a condo, for instance.

we own a small rowhouse in Georgetown built in 1880 and you can hear absolutely NOTHING next door. Things were so solidly built back then.

However, I rented a newer construction townhouse in the mid 90s in NorthernVA and the walls between were paper thin.

It will depend on both the quality of the construction adn the neighbors.

We used to live in a townhouse and, while noise was not an issue, I did not like it. Having three levels drove me nuts - my legs were really sore for the first few weeks because of walking up and down the stairs.

Was that the only exercise you were getting?
I am asking because my grandmother lived in a 3 level house, and for her the stairs were on some days the only exercise she got. It kept her somewhat in shape. She lived to be very old.

I'm sorry to say, but if stairs in a TH are making you sore, you are really out of shape and for the sake of your health, should consider a major lifestyle change.

I do not even exercise (other than walking around town), and would say I'm a bit flabby, but live on the 4th floor of a condo with no elevator and I'm not sore, even after lugging up groceries, a baby, and often a sleeping toddler.
