Pet Insurance! Yay of Nay???

Pet insurance is more comparable to extended warranties or service plans on all the Stuff around your house than it is to people’s medical insurance. Some people by all those plans too, but we firmly self-insure against all that stuff too. Insurance is for catastrophic losses you can’t afford.

My parents paid $20k for chemo for their ten year old dog to get an extra year with her. Pretty much the definition of affording to have a dog, I think?

The next dog they got insurance for, and added on to another younger dog they also had. In three years they have gotten back all their premiums and then some, and for nothing major. Things like vomiting after eating a dead animal, pulling a leg running after a squirrel, etc.

My only complaint about our policy is it doesn’t cover the $75 vet visit fee even for covered events. Luckily all our guy has done is pick a minor fight at the dog park, which was much cheaper than expected so just barely didn’t hit the deductible. Anything else he does to himself this year would be covered 90%.

It's a no brainer for us because my pet insurance is discounted/subsidized through work.

Trupanion made it possible to help our dog have less pain and more time with us. They were more helpful and compassionate that our own medical insurance.

Depends on the breed. DW spent a lot of time researching what is out there. We went with Nationwide for our new pup
