OK - totally unrelated question -- but OP and others, if you work, how do you get to go to the gym 4-5 times a week in order to even use the childcare? I have been trying to figure out how to work the gym in my routine with one toddler and can only see doing it on the weekends. Do others go at night?

I really don't get to the gym on weeknights with my toddler. she's already in daycare 10 hours a day - i don't want to make it 11, and then cut into her dinner time. (when she was an infant, we went more often.) I really only use the gym childcare on weekends. The other days I either go during lunch, go during the commute time on my telecommute day, or if my ex has her Wednesday night through Thursday morning, I go on Wednesday night and Thursday before work. So I don't buy an unlimited pass, since I've figured out that it wouldn't pay off unless I went 10 times in a month. I usually use gym childcare more like 5-6 times/month.

If I were a SAHM, I'd probably use the hell out of the gym childcare, since I'd have plenty of time with my kid! (maybe too much?)

re: the expensive gym memberships - some gyms have really nice amenities. When I had two gym memberships, one had towel service. I still brought my own towels (for environmental reasons) but it was nice to have a backup in case I forgot. Also, sometimes the more expensive gyms have more equipment or better equipment, more or better group classes, fewer members or free personal training and other perks. Some have pools and/or saunas, hot tubs, steam rooms, etc. In most cases, you get what you pay for. It's just a matter of figuring out what it's worth to you. For me, location is the big thing, then plentiful cardio machines.

I feel like one perk of working is that you DON'T have to use the gym daycare!!!

I work out at lunch and on weekends (when DH can take care of our daughter).

I have never looked into it, but the daycare at my WSC is right on the ground floor. It creeps me out because I don't know what is to stop anyone from going in and taking my toddler, so I've never wanted to use it (plus she is in daycare during the week and that is enough). I'm sure they have a sign in sheet or some precautions, but it makes me nervous.

Our normal daycare is at work and it's super high security in terms of who gets in the building, who gets in the daycare, who leaves with a child, etc. So that is what I'm used to and anything less than that system makes me nervous. But obviously that's personal, people seem to leave their kids in there and it works out!

To the previous poster saying you could not find a gym in Dc for $40 - you are wrong. I pay $29 month at Fitness First on L(?) street. It is not a fancy gym, but it has what I need/use and I like it. I also go to the one in Arlington, which is nicer. No childcare at either of these locations.

Okay, I pay $156 and am seeing folks paying in the $140 range - I am supposed to be getting the D.C. bar discount, but now I wonder. Did any of you negotiate a lower rate?

We've had some DCUM posters on here lately acknowledging that they live in Dallas, Oregon and elsewhere. Which is fine, but a $40 gym in Des Moines is totally irrelevant to those of us who live in DCum, yes? It's not a point of reference because when you live along the Conn. Ave corridor, you're not going to find a gym for $40 a month.

So I'll go back -- I live in the District, and I pay almost $70 a month at WSC.

Although I joined in Arlington, I believe I can use any of the local metro area Gold's Gyms, so my $40/month would allow me to go to the 3 that are located there (downtown, Capitol Hill ad Van Ness.

I actually pay $135 through the Foggy Bottom Association - had to pay a year up front, and membership to join FBA is only $10/year. Joined in 2008. I actually know a lady in my building who pays $130/month - but she joined a couple years prior to 2008.

Do you have to live in Foggy Bottom to join?
