At the games I’ve been to this summer, the kids are all sitting maskless together in the stands before the game. So are the parents. YMMV. |
Every parent on our team wears a mask. The girls sit apart and don’t share any gear. We’re using dugouts, but only 3-4 girls there and others in stands. Parents are in chairs. |
Why are all these professional MLB players and coaches getting covid, then? |
| Sorry OP, looks like tennis and golf it is! |
| Recreation soccer. Recreation girls at that age won't be on top of each other, and are also not just chasing the ball. Outside, lots of running/exercise good team building, learning and fun. |
Seriously? They spend massively more time together (travel together, meals, clubhouse/locker room etc) than a kid softball team. It’s a career for them. They likely aren’t contracting it while actually playing- outdoors- but in those other areas. |
Depends entirely on the team and level of play. Have you seen those travel softball parents and their setups? Tents, snack tables, chairs, everyone congregating and hanging out? That's not a judgment but it IS what happens. There is often not a ton of room at the fields, also, for spectating. Unless you want to be out in one of the field areas (and that's not doable for all fields). And then, of course, this is all dependent on people upholding their own responsibilities off field (being safe) AND not sending their kid to practice/games if they've been exposed or are sick. But, since people already do that at school and other places, we know that will not be the case. So is softball safer? Maybe. But, I think there the differences in major leagues -that have more money and ability to make the players safe- that you are understating here. |
Which is why this summer they aren’t letting girls in the dugout. They have assigned seats outside of the fence. No sharing equipment. You get the point. Not risk free at all but much easier to mitigate risk than other sports. |
That is happening with the Richmond teams, but not with NoVA teams that I have seen. My daughter has been playing with her team since June, and no outbreaks thus far, even with families doing some minor travelling here and there. (driving to lakes, cabins, etc.) |
| My kids are doing swim team and having virtual meets. Even relays are no contact. |
??? Softball is incredibly active. I run my kids more that soccer players in practice. |
You're lying. You know how I know you're lying? Kids don't use the stands in softball in normal times. No one sits in the stands except maybe one or two parents who forgot their camp chairs. Softball spectators tend to sit in camp chairs behind the backstop or along the infield fence. They're just spreading out. Girls don't sit together in the stands. Before COVID they might congregate in the dugout. But that doesn't happen now. And if you were at games this summer, you're watching travel, which is taking this very seriously. There are no rec leagues operating at the moment. |
+1000 |
| Our league is having rec softball and rec little league this summer. The kids spread out on the bleachers and parents have to sit past the outfield fence |
| Outdoor sports are almost all fine, especially for kids that don’t go out to bars/night clubs at night like pros and college athletes. Covid is really not going to spread via outdoor sports. It can, but low probability. This is all hysteria. Covid transmits thru prolonged close contact like you have at bars, living facilities, weddings, etc. |
