Infants, Toddlers, & Preschoolers
Hi OP, I think you just have to master a sling. I liked the Sleepy Wrap (highly similar to Moby) for the newborn stage, and 4 months and up love the Ergo. There are newborn inserts for the carriers like Ergo (not sure if Bjorn needs one, I think so). If you have a wrap type sling and just hate that, an Ergo with a newborn insert is the way to go. I have fond memories of tooling around Target, Trader Joes and Whole Foods with my little guy against my heart.
Sounds like you know it's too dangerous to place the infant car seat atop the shopping cart, but I wanted to throw that out there. PPs have suggested putting the car seat right into the shopping cart--never tried that, but then again, I do load up my cart without a baby in it! |
| I would either use the car seat adapter on my stroller and fit as much as I could in the basket or put the entire car seat in the cart. |
| what carseat do you have that fits in the cart? |
|
It's amazing how much stuff you can fit in the basket of a snap n go. I used to take it to Walmart! I also have just put the baby in the carrier in the cart's basket--you can fit a lot around the baby. Then after check out let someone help you to your car while you just carry the carrier. Find grocery stores that offer assistance.
If you don't have a bjorn, send an email to all your friends with kids and I bet someone can lend you one--they don't get used very long. |
| for the love of God, please don't shop using your stroller basket to hold your items to be purchased -- you run the risk of getting a concealment of merchandise charge |

Hi OP - At this time we pretty much did the car seat in the top of the grocery cart but as soon as DS was a bit more alert & interested in the world, we switched over to the Bjorn, which I still use for shopping at most stores (DS is now 6 months). I also hate having him in the car seat so much so the Bjorn was a good alternative to taht.
He's pretty much always facing out now because he loves to see things, but I figured out when he faces in I can feed him with one hand and still shop with the other. |
paranoid much? Have you seen the basket on a snap&go? No concealment there. But OP- I used the car seat on the cart, but then after a month just the bjorn. |

This is what we did. I couldn't get the hang of an Ergo, etc. Any big shopping, I'd wait until DH was home to go without DD. And, ORDER ONLINE!!! Really, it's a lifesaver. You can check prices at the various sites like Diapers.com/Drugstore.com/CVS.com and with free shipping and the savings of time, it's a great deal. Especially for all the big stuff (like those big diaper boxes). |
this seems a little paranoid to me, but to each his own. |
|
OP - Please don't put your baby's carseat in the top (toddler) part of the shopping cart. It's a humongous hazard and that section is not meant to hold a carseat.
Like many of the PPs, I would either put the carseat in the main part of the cart and put my groceries/items around the baby or leave my baby in the Snap & Go and use the store's basket. Good luck! |
| I have a 5 week old and was figuring that same thing out this week! I used the snap-n-go stroller with my keyfit carseat for small shopping trips and we just completed our first costco trip using the bjorn. He slept the entire time...i couldn't believe how easy it was! |
I didn't write this, but just wanted to weigh in that it's actually not that paranoid. I noticed at whole foods the other day they now have a sign that says "please use our shopping carts until you pay for your purchases and do not put items into personal carriers before checkout." Clearly this is becoming more of an issue now that folks are increasingly bringing their own bags and baskets to the market. I doubt any mom is going to be thrown into the clink for this, but I'd rather not be on the receiving end of any security scrutiny. |

I could never get my car seat to "snap" in the top of the basket, and the thing just took up so much room the in cart it didnt' seem worth it. So I just used the travel stroller (yes, in hindsight, a snap and go would have been easier). Much easier once you get to the car beacause the stroller has brakes (my first venture with the shopping car I parked on an incline - and struggled to get my child out of the cart)
I'm not sure what the person saying you could risk concealment is talking about. Maybe there is some law about your stuff not being visable? But baskets in the bottom of strollers are pretty visable - and it's hard for me to believe they would arrest you unless you leave the store without paying (I always did double check to make sure this didn't happen. I also have a string bag which goes over my shoulder - that I could put stuff in (clearly not concealed). But I would only put durable or soft - couldn't be squashed stuff in that. |
Wow. And whole foods is one of the worst places to try to take a kid in a shopping cart (narrow aisles, no one lets you get past). One more reason to not shop there. But I guess it has to do with shoplifting. I still think the bottom of a snap and go is much more transparent. |
