This. White upper class schools have the highest scores and the more diverse the school, the lower the rating.

In Falls Church, the lower-rated schools have a lot of low-income Hispanic kids who lack the same level of English proficiency as other students. Their test scores reflect this. And the kids with the highest scores at some of those schools are Asian, not white.

So that makes Great Schools less racist, how?

The Great Schools methodology is crude, but that doesn’t make it racist. Unless of course you actually believe kids of a particular race are incapable of doing well.

We are in falls church zoned timber lane/Longfellow/McLean. Timber lane is a very diverse score leading to the lower rating but all families I know of all backgrounds love it. It is a great education to give your kids about having diverse friends and understanding differences.

It seems to lean very heavy on the "equity" score. At Shrevewood, Whites/Asians (73% of the school) have an 8/10 test score rating, while Hispanics (18%) have a 2/10 score. That leads to a 1/10 equity score and drags down the school rating to 4/10. Maybe that speaks to the ESOL teaching, maybe it is because the apartments on Lee Hwy have more recent immigrants.

The logic seems to be that a school should be judged by how well its least advantaged students perform. That isn’t an inherently racist approach, but it may be naive and have the effect of leading higher-income families to avoid schools that have more than a handful of low-income kids since some will make decisions based solely on the overall rating.
