We've had field (American) labs for many years. They are indeed more active than English labs, but our experience has been they just need more regular exercise. They are great hiking companion and love to play ball. We have used Cresthill and Deep Run, both in Virginia.

I have an English lab and she is pretty lazy and low key. Sometimes she gets tired on a walk before I do! Of course, she is wearing a heavy fur coat.
