I'm struggling to figure out why they'd keep the existing building and what use it could be.

Its only a hill and prime real estate. I think that whole corridor in Woodley Park needs revitalization and leveling that hill to put something amazing in like the Wharf could do that.

Actually I've lived in the District for 10 years. Residents in Woodley Park have been complaining about failing restaurants, businesses, and grocery stores the whole time and don't do a thing to reverse it either.

There have always been plans to convert the property to condos...it was always an outlier for a real luxury/conference hotel and with the business district moving east and south it just makes less and less sense.

I don't agree that it's an eyesore. I hope they don't demolish it.

I like it, too. And I doubt the building is going to be demolished just because the hotel is going out of business. I can think of plenty of uses for it.

Those of you who think it will be demolished next week have no idea what you're up against in the historic preservation boards in this city.

No it is the Omni Shoreham which is the eye sore. Wardman Park is at least pretty.

Good luck on fighting the WPCA and historic designation for demolition. Not. Gonna. Happen.

But it can be redeveloped!

That's the only real convention sized hotel besides National Harbor/Gaylord Marriott. DC is about to lose a lot of small convention business ( 1500 - 4000 attendees).

That is very sad. People lost their jobs, and you crow about an "eyesore"?

The Washington Convention Center in Mt Vernon, which has meeting spaces for as small as 50 people and as large as 42,000, says hi.

There's 8 Marriott's EOTP in Downtown D.C. alone. They'll just take over positions in other locations and also their community spending.

And is not cost effective for meetings of that size.

Agree. That would seem to be a waste of resources. I hope it finds utility.

Trying to clarify....

the building at the corner of Woodley and CT Ave is the Wardman Tower and is now condos. The hotel is back in the middle of the property.

While the potential loss of the hotel will impact jobs and the commercial corridor, it is also an opportunity to rethink the parcel. JBG had an amazing proposal a few years ago; while they walked away, the concept should be revisited. Extend the commercial area up into the property and add several thousand units of housing, including affordable and family sized (ie 3-4 bedrooms) and it could be transformative.

I love this building! I’ve always liked the architecture- and have many fond memories of attending events there. I hope it gets reconfigured as condos.
Question: Is part of the building complex already condos?

+1

It is a historic building (registered), Marriot was leasing, and there are $2.5m+ condos on the third floor up - I don't suspect that it can just be leveled?

Good Lord OP, talk about jumping to conclusions and spreading rumors. Yes, Marriott will likely leave but they do not even own it. Third floor & up are condos and the building is listed on the historic registry so cannot be torn down.
