What does romance mean to men?

Men see romance as a means to an end, not an end in itself. But if any man sees free dinner = sex, run from him. I don’t know any women who can’t afford their own dinner, and with better company, but the converse is true — don’t keep accepting dates with a guy if you have no intention of moving the relationship forward.
