There is no special chemical compound. It’s lime (limestone) or coffee grounds. |
You didn’t specify what variety you have. Big leaf hydrangeas prefer full sun-partial sun, so you should be good. (DC) |

We had landscaping done in November and 2 of the 3 hydrangeas have bloomed some. But they are small and have a lacy flower vs. the round full bloom I expected.
Anyone know what these might be and how we should prune to get more flowers next year. They get FULL sun. |
Don’t prune. Let them be. It takes 2-3 years for them to come into their own. (Also Google lace cap hydrangeas - they also may have planted a different variety than you expected) |
Thanks on both fronts! I googled and they are indeed lace cap. They are pretty but small and not what I expected. Nonetheless, we'll see if after a couple years they come into their own. A plant nearby didn't survive (an Azalea) so I'd like to put in one of the hydrangeas I was expecting (grew up in NH and they are such a part of summer). |

There are so many varieties of hydrangea with different needs, bloom times and blooming habits. You really need to know what kind you have and how to care for that specific variety. Here is an article discussing the main types we usually see with photos.
