| So I live in undesirable South Reston by the metro. In fact I can walk. There are plenty of SFH homes that are within a mile but the problem is their is not much for sale. The town homes are cute and there are some newer four story townhomes that fit your budget. The schools ate diverse which means they don't have 8s or 9s. So you have to be okay with your kids going to school with black and brown kids. Don't move to South Reston if you want an all white neighborhood/schools. |

| OP here. How are South Lakes High and Hughes Middle school? They don't seem to have that good ratings -- we don't need all-white schools though |

OP again, we actually found a TH that we really like -- it seems like it's about 0.9 mile to the metro. If I bike or scooter to the station, I should be able to get my commute to an hour? what do you think?

Have lived in Reston 23 years. Moved from NW DC so we were experienced city dwellers.. Love it here. Very walkable. Love the paths and lakes. Raised my son here. He went to Hughes and South Lakes. Schools are fine. Don’t read into test scores. That is reflective of the wide diversity.
That said, I commuted downtown for one year and wanted to kill myself. The commute was indeed soul sucking. I also hated the job too so that may have had some impact on my misery. But the commute was not a short one. Now I work in Reston and am home hours earlier. |

How did you commute? How many times per week? If you were able to walk to Reston metro, would that have helped? |

They’re fine. I’ve sent my kids through South Lakes pyramid. One note—it is an IB school, so no AP offerings. But IB is rigorous and we’ve been very happy. Also note Hughes is going through a big renovation. Looking really good so far. |

Keep in mind the Wiehle metro has only been open for 6 years. |

You can map it using Google. I like the walk and in normal times I would meet my family at Founding Farmers after work for dinner since it is right at the metro. There are a lot of bike paths and bike lanes so biking is not an issue. I agree with the poster who made the comment about IB. It is more rigorous and if you child wants to go to college in Canada or Europe, it is more accepted than a regular high school diploma. |

If we can find a good place near that area, we will probably consider it too but it seem there aren’t many good options in our budget within walking distance to the metro stations and we like the trails and parks in Reston area plus access to tech jobs for DH |

If you've commuted on a train for 50 minutes, every day in all weather, that last mile is a real drag. |
