What is your second grader learning in Social Studies right now?

In DCPS ... absolutely nothing! DC loves social studies, politics and history. When I asked teacher about it during parent teacher conference, she said, quite sincerely, that she was too busy to teach social studies and wouldn't be doing it at all. It was hard enough to get in all the reading and math, so there just wasn't enough time to do social studies. Thank god for a long term substitute who at least found a few minutes a week to hand out the DCPS social studies text so that the kids got something.

So lame.....

That's the reason I am in favor of mandatory state (or city) testing of kids in elementary school in all subjects, each year. What doesn't get tested (but someone other than the teacher) may not get taught. Good teachers will teach the curriculum regardless, but weak teachers will skimp on any subject that will not show up in their test scores. Sadly.
