Have you ever dressed up for Halloween or college party in a racially sensitive costume?

When I was a kid, my cousins made up a derogatory song about East Asians. Which was weird, because we're South Asian ourselves. But we were in Elementary school - I was probably 5-6 the last time we "sang" it. I was horrified about it by the time I was in upper elementary school, and I would be hugely embarrassed if I were "outed" about it - but at the same time, Kindergartners just don't know any better. If you're an adult and you don't know any better... I don't think you can excuse it on "well it was ok back then." I figure they must have led a severely sheltered, privileged life to be so insensitive.

Woke from birth. Gold star!

Signed,
An ignorant idiot who somehow made it to adulthood. Will you look at that!

None of mine were offensive. (Holly Hobby)

Dressed up as a belly dancer one year for a college Halloween party and an South Asian girl at a party I was at scornfully asked me "Are you supposed to be Indian or something?" She was ahead of her time. In my defense, I was actually taking belly dance classes at the time...?

Went to a "Fried chicken and 40s" party, also during college and dressing to a theme was encouraged. I went with a white trash aesthetic (I am white). Definitely cringey in hindsight.

I won't be running for office anytime soon.

Yeah I'm going to go ahead and guess you remain an ignorant idiot in adulthood.

Not even once. I'm 40, grew up here in the DC area.

I went in drag to a Halloween party - I'm a cis hetero woman and dressed as a man. Halloween party was at a gay club and I went with my best friend and his then-boyfriend (now husband). We are all middle aged parents now so none of us have any idea if that's unacceptable these days.

My 3 year old wants to be a pirate this year.

My 3 year old was a dinosaur last year. The year before that she was Winnie the Pooh.

I can’t think of how those could be offensive?

Winnie the Pooh is offense to Chinese and Chinese-Americans:

I did a white trash costume.

Today’s woke people haven’t declared white trash to be offensive yet but I know it’s coming.

The Statue of Liberty is a symbol of the European oppressors’ genocidal immigration policies and is highly offensive to Native American peoples.

Yes - if a costume can be imputed as offensive, then it is offensive.

Cultural appropriation. And offensive.

I wore a borrowed silk sari one year. It was a fancy dress wedding and I wanted something beautiful. I had a blouse made to go with it. Neither the person lending it, nor the seamstress who made my top found it offensive. I didn’t camp it up though. No bindi, no wig, normal makeup, simple jewelry. I wasn’t in character. I’m not sure if that’s out of line or appropriation, I thought it was a beautiful garment.

Not an Indian wedding, it was on Halloween.
