I am a little older than Northam. I agree if he could legitimately moonwalk then it was ok to dress as Michael Jackson. He probably should not have used black face, by today's standards, but back then I don't think it was viewed as the horrible racist crime it is now. In fact, I think if a moonwalking Michael Jackson impersonator in blackface had appeared almost anywhere most people would have been impressed and would have assumed he was a big fan of MJ, not racist.

Just my opinion.

Another 80s kid - and I agree. Heck I dressed as a bum for Halloween one year as a kid, and used to regularly dress as a "gypsy" just in my normal life when I was very young. And I grew up in a super liberal household!

Times were different, for sure.

Isn't part of this about education and getting people to open their eyes and change their ways? Being angry about what someone did 20 years ago but has changed since is what we want.

When I was younger , I used words like "gyped" and gay and retard in bad ways "that's so gay". " He's so retarded". I'm sure I used other terms that are not acceptable by today's standards. I've learned. I no longer use such terms. I recognize why they are bad. Isn't that the point? Don't dig up something I said 20 years ago and try to claim that's the person I am now.
