Any opinions on team gymnastics start-up?

I realize it is still impactful, but I'm not afraid of the program closing down. I am afraid, however, that they will be the last to open due to county restrictions that private gyms can work around. They are way less flexible and don't even allow private lessons. We've heard squat from the county and I haven't heard anything at all about reopening procedures from coaches. I know another large private gym was working out their guidelines weeks ago.

We absolutely could make it work if it weren't for rec classes. The compulsories would have to be split, but most optional levels are small groups, if not paired with another level.

There’s more than one county facility in the DC area but the ones I know of are multi-use buildings. I believe that Arlington DPR cancelled Enjoy Arlington classes for the summer. Which would include gymnastics recreational classes. There are some times team activities have been allowed to operate out of the facility when recreational classes are cancelled if I recall correctly (I could be wrong) so it still may be possible for team practices to operate this summer. I doubt the county will tell them very far ahead of time or has told them a direct plan now. As far as I know camps still aren’t cancelled so that could count towards facility use too along with a variety of other things. It’s going to be complex for them to work in rerouting traffic through the building and deciding how spaces can be used while still mitigating risk based on fire codes etc...so even compared to the complexities that private gyms that aren’t multi-use are dealing with, it may be even more complex for the county to decide how to allocate the resources of a multi-use facility to the community while following the guidelines. I agree they have more leeway in cancelling certain activities or used indefinitely without risk of shutting down.

or I guess it depends if you consider Sportsplex county run but I would say it’s in a pretty similar position

Have any Northern VA gyms communicated a reopen plan with estimated timing? With phase 1 starting this weekend, what does that mean for your gym? We are still completely in the dark and am looking for data points.

Nothing from ours yet. They have been great with the virtual classes but curious to hear about the plan for not only the summer but next year in terms of the girls advancing to the next level (or perhaps not). By this time typically we would already know details surrounding that.

I'm wondering the same about my kid's MoCo gym. I think they're saying Marc Ehlrich will make an announcement today 5/28. If that means Phase 1 will start soon, I wonder how quickly we can be expected to enter Phase 2, since that's supposedly when gyms can open.

Any VA gyms starting outdoor workouts? Still radio silence from our gym.

I’ve seen gyms in VA do it, but not northern VA.

Gymnastics seems like an activity that is particularly risky -- indoors with heavy respiratory activity, potentially in close contact (coaches needing to be close or spotting). I am interested to see how it could be done in a socially distanced way.

I have a kid doing serious ballet so facing the same sort of concerns. How can they socially distance in the dance studio?

Gym is fine in small groups. Gym is fine with coaches masked.

It’s not a private gym. The county runs us and doesn’t understand that we can’t have teams without experienced coaches. They think toddler gym and optionals coaches are interchangeable. The team fully funds itself and doesn’t require county funds. We shouldn’t be in the same boat at rev center classes.

FYI I’m getting some info that non-northern VA gyms are setting opening dates. The information I see about gyms (if it becomes confirmed that youth gymnastics facilities are included in gyms, because this became a last minute hang up in some states) is that they can open at 30% capacity. Not sure exactly how that’s determined, by fire code regulation numbers or what.

I'm so frustrated by this and jealous of gyms elsewhere in the state.

You should be and should be contacting your local county government representation daily. Every mail to them should remind them you vote.
