What are you going to do this summer?

I think that after quarantine we definitely won’t immediately go on a trip. It will take some time. I’m planning to go to the UAE after our long home vacation. So far I am not booking anything, because no one knows how our life will turn. But I think that there will be no particular problems. As well as with transport. I will rent a car https://evolve.ae/brand/ferrari upon arrival so as not to use public transport. Let it be much more expensive, but for your own safety.

I originally thought “drink more wine, eat chocolate and pray for my sanity”. Then I realized you were asking about what to do with the kids...

I hired a college age babysitter until college reopens. I have a preschooler so I can’t just ship him off to the neighborhood pool (which is likely closed) unattended. I’m pretty sure I’d be arrested.

I'm not sure. I know when I was sick, and I can look back at the week prior...I mean, I had work meetings, I went to my exercise studio, I went to my kids' basketball games - I wasn't around anyone who I remember being sick, so I really don't know.

Can you pay your teens to babysit and entertain the younger kids?

My kids are younger than yours. Oldest is 11, youngest is 5. My husband is still going in to work, and I have more or less quit. We have planted a vegetable garden, put in a little fairy garden, and will probably do a lot of hiking, fishing, and bike riding.

My older two want to start running, so we have been doing the couch 2 5k workouts.

Exactly this. We decided last night to keep the same daily structure. Our kids will benefit from the added learning and we’ll stay sane. Basically we have canceled summer.

Getting kids running is a great idea. How young can they start?

Pp here. Mine are 8 and 11. They have to run the mile at school, so this seems reasonable.

Don’t make them run if they under 6. Child abuse

Pp here doing couch to 5k with my kids. I have to say that it seems abusive at any age to force someone to run. They wanted to run. They think it would be cool to play tag with their friends and be able to run all of recess.

+1. DC’s school has been great with distance learning. Lots of extra enriching content available that we have not done yet. We will tap into those plus another online resource. Plan to do above, play in the afternoon, then some reading and math apps.

How fun! I’m sure your kids will be so excited!

If one of your kids is 16, then pay them to babysit the other two and do the entertaining (i.e. bike rides, playing in the blow up pool/sprinker, sidewalk chalk, watching movies etc.) Set an hourly rate and pay him or her; it'd be a great way to make some money for your oldest since no other places that usually hire high school age kids in the summer will be open. I had to get summer jobs as soon as I was 16 and didn't do camps at that age anymore anyways. Consider yourself lucky. I'm stuck at home working all summer with two under 4!

The joys of asymptomatic carriers, I guess.

I'm not sure what you mean by this. I was not an asymptomatic carrier myself - I was sick.

I don't remember being around someone who was sick, but I could have been around someone who got sick the next day. This would have been a week or so before everything shut down, so it's highly likely whoever had it and gave it to me didn't know it was Covid. I was told what I had was definitely the flu, even though I tested negative for the flu.

Maybe it's the joys of community spread, rather. I don't think you can blame it on asymptomatic carriers back in the first week of March.
