Neither NMSF nor NMF are an advantage for admissions. The admissions bump is about a student's SAT/ACT score.

Just try getting into a selective college with a 223 PSAT selection index and even a 1490 SAT score.

Some schools collect NMF so they offer extra merit aid to NMF but that is AFTER admissions.

I don't understand the point of PSAT when a SAT score is available. Schools look at your SAT score. No school requires your PSAT score.

The psat can’t be superscored, etc so it is a good indicator of raw abilities. Not a lot of kids prep for it. At my DCs hs, every single student present that day takes it, so it can identify talented underserved students. A good bunch of schools give full rides+ stipends for it

Another advantage of the PSAT is that almost all students take it in fall of junior year. If all students took the SAT in the fall of junior year, the College Board could use that instead. Maybe that would be a good direction for the College Board to go in. Except, that would decrease revenue.
