The police presence in Lincoln Park is going to turn me into a Tea Partier

NOBODY IS GETTING COVID BY SITTING IN THE PARK. Nobody.

+ a million.

My DH (hardcore Dem) says the same

But Lincoln Park - the 1st weekend after there was the Stay at Home order looked like a typical weekend picnic. It was the weekend of Cherry Blossom. Since they could not figure out what it meant when DC sent a notice that "All Parks and outdoor spaces are closed" they needed to enforce it. Others around dc figured it out. The entitled around Lincoln Park could not. Congratulations - now we use our tax dollars this way.

Hope so. Because if you’re strolling along in a park right now, that’s where you belong. In jail.

Why are they in Lincoln Park? I don’t see them policing any other parks.

Because Lincoln Park had such a high rate of non-compliance with the "All Parks are closed order"
They highly educated in that area did not understand that it meant the park was closed (or the rule did not apply to them)

Other parts of the city understood therefore they did not need to patrol the space.

They are no more highly educated than other parts of the city, but they are much more full of themselves.

Most days one car and one national guard, now the police don't even get out the car. Get a life it really is not so bad, if that is all it takes you have a big problem. Me, I love that all is peaceful and quiet in DC around the Cap Hill area. They smile, speak if you speak to them, and are local so get to know your community officers : )

You didn’t care all last decade when it was police departments using military surplus in majority black neighborhoods, but you care now?

I cared then too. I cared when MRAPs were being used by police post 2003. It bothers me that the police are put on a fking pedestal and given their own special PARKING SPOTS.

They have their own parking spaces so that they can quickly park and respond when they are called. I have my own parking space at the hospital. I’m a chaplain. Does that bother you?

It is much worse than this. Per the Supreme Court, they are given their own special standard for the use of violence, which is why they typically walk away regardless how outrageously they behave.

That weekend was prior to shutting down businesses in DC, as I recall. You can enforce physical distance in the park without literally surrounding it with national guard.

Untrue. I hear numerous stories of people crowded onto Rock Creek Park trails, I have no doubt that there are people sitting in parks RIGHT NOW THIS SECOND elsewhere in DC. It's absurd public health theater, no more, no less.

Not OP but sitting outside far from others is not against the DC order. All it requires is remaining 6' from others not in your household and wiping down any equipment used before and after. There is no requirement to keep moving. Unlike the police and some National Guard specialist I actually am a lawyer and read the darn order. I support the Mayor's order. I don't support law enforcement harassing people for law abiding behavior that has no reasonable relation to public health. Public faith and willingness to abide by the orders is key, and it decreases when law enforcement does stupid stuff like this.

You can walk thru the park, but you can't sit down and/or congregate. Seems like an easy enough set of rules to understand.

The park is there for exercise, not for relaxation or to dawdle away your time.

I can think of a million better things for those officers to be doing that would ACTUALLY contribute to fighting coronavirus in DC.

I should have been more exact in my comment: I'm talking about the Walmart parking lot FFS. If you have a disability, I understand the need for designated spots but why does the copper who is out shopping with his family on Saturday need a special spot? We don't even have special parking for veterans!
