Yep, ADHD first grader in my house who sings allll the time. Agony to me, also an ADHD mom. None of the suggestions above would help her stop. I give her other things to do with her mouth: a Dum Dum lollipop to suck on, for example.
This quiets her and helps her focus on other things. Obviously she cannot do this her whole life. We literally just got her official diagnosis right before Covid 19 started so I am trouble shooting in my own using my own life experience to help inform me. But I think other things to keep her mouth busy — or at least other things to give her sensory input — could help. Good luck to us all!!!! |
Aw! He's probably just really happy! Maybe do a quick lesson on musical dynamics (piano and forte) and gently ask him to sing piano from now on? My kid sings constantly, too, and I just realized I tune it out because husband who is home all the time now is going NUTS with the singing and I haven't even noticed! ![]() |
This won’t work with a kid who sings to stim. |
Is there anything some people wouldn't start a behavior chart for? |
in addition to a lollipop, other "alerting" things for the mouth like sticky, salty, sour or crunchy:
*chewing gum, eating carrots, pretzels or other crunchy things, *sticky things (peanut butter) * sour (pickles) or *salty (vege straws) all might help. You of course don't want kids snacking on junk all day, so (sugar free) chewing gum might also help sometimes, and carrots dipped in peanut butter aren't as bad as chips and pretzels all day.. |
My first grader does the same thing. I’ve discovered that playing calming music, or an audible story (kids stories are currently free!) has helped a lot. |
Singing is a natural human expression! Let the poor kid sing! |
I laughed out loud. Im not going to give my kid pickles to stop them from singing. |
This, plus noise cancelling headphones for you. I like Jabra in ear headphones. You could also try to establish times during the day where the singing can be freely done. You will just have to go to another room or slap your headphones on. I have a son that sings and dances all the time. He's a little older so I can just tell him to give me a break sometimes. Most of the time I put in my noise cancelling headphones. Believe it or not, a few months ago I bought him and Ipod and he likes to go to his room and sing and dance. |
Op here —thanks everyone I love these responses! I haven’t asked his teacher yet how he redirected the singing, but I will, and no I haven’t posted this before, and yes I do also have sensory issues plus occasional migraines — noise *really* bothers me. So yeah we’re a great combo! I love my son and his exuberance however. Someone mentioned old town road. For my son it’s been: old town road, any Bruno Mars song, and any pop 100 he hears (not thru me). Also theme songs to cartoons. He takes a broadway class but sadly does not sing the classroom tunes at home... he claims he only wants me to hear him at the class performance ?? |
He's happy. Maybe he'll start whining and crying all day and you'll be praying for him to start singing again. |
