I thought DC residents get instate tuition for college. Is there income limit? |
If true, that would make up for taxation without representation. In-state tuition without residency. But seriously, wouldn't you qualify for in-state tuition at University of D.C.? Maybe that would be your best bet. Don't you think? |
If they have been accepted to both, then it just depends on which one has the better campus "feel" for them and how well their majors are supported, and how they feel about possibly learning at home fall semester.
UVA will be more conservative, UNC will be more diverse but will have many more NC natives than UVA will have Virginia natives. (I'm a UNC grad.) If he hasn't been accepted, it is very hard for an OOS student to get into UNC. |
Neither of these statements is true. |
+1 |
UNC for sure |
Both schools have taken hits to their reputations in recent years. UVA seriously bungled the Rolling Stone rape story, which turned out to be a fraud and a hoax. But the UVA administration leapt into action and shut down a fraternity house and smeared a number of the boys living there. No due process. Tar and feather your own students -- before the evidence (or lack thereof) can be evaluated. Shameful behavior on the part of UVA. And, of course, we all know about the academic cheating scandal involving UNC athletes. A big mess, and the kind of black mark that lasts a long, long time. |
DC residents have access to tuition assistance grants of $10K/year to state universities. It’s a federally funded program called DC TAG, and it’s not means-tested. When the program was established (20 years ago?), $10K/year made up the difference between IS and OOS tuition at many state schools, but the grant amount has not increased with tuition rate changes. |
DCTAG program pays for DC resident $10k a year for college tuition. The income limit is 500k. |
Well the long-running academic cheating scandal at UNC resulted in a deserved, lengthy, harsh NCAA penalties. Wait, what? It didn't? |
Both schools are good values in-state, but OOS, I'd recommend looking at other schools including privates that would be roughly same cost and provide more attention to undergraduates. |
Is it enough, for example to cover IS - OOS tuition differential at schools such as VCU or UMBC? JMU or George Mason? University of Virginia at Wise? How about Western Carolina University? |
The Rolling Stone thing was years ago. Different administration.
OP, can't make a bad decision here. Great schools, great reputations, lots of good opportunities to develop a variety of interests. The drive to Chapel Hill is a little rough compared to the drive to Charlottesville. That's all I have! |
UNC is more research focused, being in the Research Triangle and next to two other research universities: Duke and NC State. This also leads it to have a bigger international footprint than UVA which is more parochial to the Mid-Atlantic/South
However for undergraduate, they are both similar with UVA probably having a stronger undergraduate population, and for Finance/Consulting, UVA will have better recruiting. |
OP here.
These are the two schools she is considering. Yes, she has gotten into both. UNC-Chapel Hill is about $40k/year for cost of attendance, while UVA is about $50K. |
