Definitely read the book. Very good.

It’s a cult with a strong understanding of how to get what they need for their community through political means.

You are correct....I live in Ocean County, NJ. This has destroyed our town/county. We are moving as soon as possible, as is everyone else we know. We are powerless to do anything more than get out.

They make me understand crazy evangelicals, Catholics and other kinds of religious extremists.

Most Catholics aren't religious extremists.

I had crazy Catholic neighbors. They exist. They had 8 kids whom they home-schooled. It was eye-opening as a Jew. I thought it was only evangelicals.

That’s an exception rather than the rule.

Does anyone know the name of the orchestral string piece played in Episode 2?

And apart from Opus Dei, the crazy Catholics tend to get shut down by the Catholic church. Like the Catholic cult that basically created Montgomery Village. The DC diocese shut it down.

I loved the show and binged the entire ahow in one sitting. And then watched the "making of". And then googled a bunch of articles about the author.

Tldr: she's probably less heroic and more complicated in real life. And her grandma is still alive but she cut off ties with her, which seems odd.

Berlin is flattered in this series. The infamous Berlin dance clubs are openly drug-infested. Where are the party drugs in episode 3?

Yes the part about her escape is extremely unrealistic. But the Hasidim part I believe.

The "making of" is even more fascinating than the series, which gets more improbable as it goes on. I forgot that the actors are actors. The entire production ensemble is truly amazing. Too bad that they are all Germans. I hope Netflix will invest in more German films for the American audience.

Agree

All extremists are the exception rather than the rule. That’s kind of how it works.

Well I think PP is trying to say that all Hasidim are extremists, which isn’t what you can say about Catholics. You can say all Opus Dei or all of those lunatics who don’t accept Vatican II are extremists.

Even the most devout Catholics do not have anywhere near the birthrates of the Hasidim. Will they stop when they have replaced their six million lost souls?

For those Andrew Cuomo groupies out there, he is their enabler.

Loved Shira Haas on Shtisel- will definitely watch this too!

I read the book a while ago. They definitely made the husband way more sympathetic on the show. In the book, he has serious sexual issues and is abusive.
