Three schools will be combining into one elementary school, so that will be a lot of kids. I get that childcare is needed, and I know the kids will not not get sick or very sick, but they are such disease vectors that I worry they will contribute to a lot more community spread.

If it's KAH they are not reopening this week.

Some companies also ban WFH with small kids at home.

Your companies will adjust expectations. Call your tits.

Keep the day cares open so that germy kids can pass along their germs to other kids and staff who will take it back home to their families.

I am not paid enough for this.- Daycare person.

Or, you know, because first responders need childcare.

Doesn't sound like you're in the right profession.

I’m concerned about corona virus germs and all of a sudden I’m the wrong profession. Ok. Meanwhile DCUM is full of people on self quarantine and avoiding social contact but I’m in the wrong profession. Believe me, of all the kids here none are from first responders.

Can you identify the school? I’m sure the neighborhood will be soooo happy to have little vectors of transmission entering their building after MCPS deep cleaned it.

And I would never complain at work or to the families. I know how to play, entertain and teach 10+ kids all year long, in the rain, snow, sun and now quarantine and keep those kids happy. I love my kids but yes, I am concerned about The germs they bring in and share.

Is this a big center?

Oh, you know that for sure?

I have an essential job that I cannot do via telework. My daughter goes to a center that has kids whose parents do everything from things you can do at home, like being a lawyer, to professions like policing and my work, which is done in an environment that cannot be replicated at home. One of her friend's mothers is a research scientist who works on viruses. If she doesn't go to work, potentially lifesaving experiments fail.

In every crisis, there are certain services that HAVE to remain. One of those is childcare.

Oh and let me say one more thing: I am confident that most people are keeping their kids home from this center. There were only 3 kids in her class yesterday. It's not as though this place is even close to operating at full capacity.

Absolutely. But those professions also most likely pay more than child care. I think we need to consider that we’re asking our daycare providers to provide a service during an extreme time at risk. Without much of a safety net.

My day care provider is an older woman who runs an in home daycare. No way in hell am I exposing her to my kid and his germs right now. This woman has supported my family for 7+ years. I don't know about the others, but my kids are home with me. Well, actually they are at work with me. I am continuing to pay my provider.

BUT I am very lucky. Not everyone has the flexibility I have. My husband works in a scientific field and has to work more than before. I don't know how long my job will be flexible. There are no easy answers that I can see with this situation.

Then childcare workers need to be paid A LOT more and offered job security, best health insurance, other benefits.
