If your kid wants to go to HYP or a top 5 SLAC, then look at the Big 5 privates because it won't happen at Yorktown.
But if they'd be happy at UVA or W&M then Yorktown is fine school. There are some very good teachers, especially in the higher level/AP classes. If your kid is more nerdy - wants to do Model UN, quizbowl, etc, - then W&L or a top private is a better choice. If your kid is sporty, then Yorktown is the place to be - the athletes are the top of the social totem pole. |
I call troll here. I can't take you seriously with such a gratuitous shot at your fellow parents. IDK about Yorktown but I'm hoping it's far better than WMS. |
Langley is better for Model UN and McLean is better for Scholastic Bowl. W-L is good for IB, as are Marshall and George Mason. If sports were really important, Madison would probably be a better choice. Bottom line is that it’s not just privates that compare favorably with Yorktown. |
Why isn't HYP possible at Yorktown? |
It’s not impossible, but without a hook HYP are going to look more favorably on minority candidates from other area public schools with more rigorous academic reputations. |
DP- My kid (ADHD with 504) had a wonderful experience at WMS. I know lots of other parents who love the school. DS had more than one teacher there that he will always remember and feel grateful for. Some people love to spout the “WMS is awful” narrative, and quite frankly they are the ones that I usually suspect are trolls. |
+1 - Places like Yorktown, Mclean, etc are actually a negative for applicants these days at these places, which is too bad. They just dont want kids from these places unless they are altogether extraordinary. |
McLean had at least 14 kids from the Class of 2019 going to Ivies + Stanford. I assume they were all strong candidates. |
URMs and legacies. Nearly all. |
Very interesting. You sound like a cheerleader or maybe you are an admin there? Parent of kid with similar profile who is miserable at WMS and so sad about losing so many good staff members to Hamm. I literally no no one who "loves the school." Some are okish with it, but love? Don't think so. |
My 8th grader does not want to go to Yorktown at all. Wont say why. Put into lottery for all options. She will go to Arlington Tech...chose it over IB. Not sure how athletics will work b/c she wants to participate. |
Seven of the 14 were Asian, so not URMs. Two were URMs, and three of the five white kids were recruited athletes. At least one of the other white kids was a legacy. |
She can still play for Yorktown teams if at either Arlington Tech or HB Woodlawn. |
Re loving WMS. Believe it. Love it. Have a high achiever and he is very well served there. Private isn’t an option for us. But we have plenty of friends in DC at the big 3 and middle school doesn’t sound terribly different. At least for the academicly inclined. Also, don’t know why you think I wouldn’t take pot shots at the vocal entitled-parent population at WMS and YHS. Why not?! Many deserve it. They treat admin and staff like they expect individual attention. Most of the unhappy parents I know fall firmly in that category. |
+1 My kid went from WMS to a big 3 for HS and was at no academic disadvantage compared to the private school kids. |
