Ritalin advice?

He is louder, has a harder time concentrating, etc. We think maybe the visual stimulus revs him up in a different way. Now, no computer games during the week, or after dinner - which he hates - but he sleeps better. To me, there are lots of reasons to go easy on computer games, but our biggest justification is behavioral.

I agree. I don't have anything to back me up but it seems similar to problems falling asleep after watching TV - something about the visual stimulation. We also don't allow video games during the week or after dinner. Our DS is also on Foucalin and it's made a tremendous difference.

For short term concentration, we sometimes use headphones (high quality) with audio tapes designed for focus and concentration. I am not an expert, and don't mean to advocate it as an alternative to medication, but I find that if I put them on while writing, I suddenly become more focused. This also help my son who has some attention difficulties. So it is a non-drug form of help.

Thanks so much everyone! OP here. Our DS has been on Ritalin (school days only) for 3 weeks and all 3 teachers (homeroom teacher, learning specialist and guidance counselor) all noticed significant behavior changes. Specifically, they say DS still has personality, zest and spunk, but does not disrupt, contributes in a positive fashion and tests better. I am thrilled. Still torn about non-school days. But all in all, I feel better. So, thank you so much to all of you for being kind and not saying anything hateful. I have enough guilt to go around without any of these crazy negative posts I often skim while browsing through tis particular site
