What do you do about your older kid when new born wakes up at night?

Throwing a different perspective into the mix. My 3.5yo is and always has been a really great sleeper. But. She wakes up every time the baby cries! We spent a lot of nights in her room reassuring her that we were taking care of the baby and encouraging her to fall back asleep. I was suprised because I'd heard the same as all the pps. We're moving them into the same room soon and I'm holding out hope that it goes smoothly. The baby is sttn now but I'm expecting the older one will start waking up early with the baby... Figure we'll just deal as it comes.

Kept baby in our room until there were 1-2 feeds overnight. That first week or so big kid mentioned being woken up but he got used to it. Now it only happens when baby is waking for that killer 5 am feed, so we've had a lot of days where both kids are up for the day at 5 am. Yay

+1

They share a room now and don’t wake up even when his brother vomits and we have to change the sheets. Kids are deep sleepers.

Kids just aren't programmed to wake up to the sound of a baby crying the way adults are. We have three kids close in age in a small house (2 kids sharing a room, crib on the wall adjacent to the other bedroom) and I could probably count on one hand the number of times one of the kids has woken another one up in the middle of the night.
