Band competition at Chinese New Year celebration - would you send your teen?

OP here.

So people on the GP board about a kid with the flu are all: "Cancel your Super Bowl party! I would not go! Don't let DH go - you all stay home!"

But this is a FFS, yes?

Because...?

I think it's irresponsible to bring busloads of kids from a different community to a place where there are likely connections and where there are confirmed cases in the area. Better safe, than sorry, IMO. Why am I so off base?

You answered your own question. Don't send him then. Why did you even ask the question?

Because I am genuinely curious. DC will, understandably be upset, and ExH and I aren't necessarily on same page. Am looking for a barometer about whether I AM off base.

Posters are generally saying you are off base. If you can get yourself over it, send him. If you can't, don't send him. Not rocket science.

Even in San Francisco, I wouldn't not go or not send my kid.

Well, a) there isn't growing news about people dying from the everyday flu and b) it seems to me that this is about more than my kid - it's about best practices and containment.

OP, the people making light of this and saying, “FFS, just go!” are probably the same people who called the McLean parents “racist” when they spoke up and insisted the Chinese student visits be canceled (in light of the virus). And it turns out, the McLean parents were absolutely right to cancel. Trust your gut, not anonymous posters trying to shame you.

Thanks, pp.

I'm not familiar with visits being cancelled. These were exchange students?

That case was different. Completely different. Shame on you.

Because you are succumbing to hysteria? Why did you ask the question if you already had your mind made up? Are you normally a troll on this board?

I was on the "FFS, no" bandwagon until you said there were confirmed cases in the city where the band will be attending.
If that's truly the case, then it would give me pause, and I'd need a lot more details about the precautions and plans for the band.
Depending on the answers, I'd probably still let him go, but I understand your concern.
If the performance is just in "China town" in some city that hasn't actually had any cases, then FFS, of course you shouldn't be concerned.

Sorry for being unclear.

The confirmed cases are in two counties surrounding SF, in the Bay Area - and went from two to four in a little over 24 hours. The parade is in SF's Chinatown. Other communities in CA have cancelled/postponed their celebrations. I haven't heard any information from our band director abut precautions and plans.

Ok. Would you eat in a Chinese restaurant?

Hell, no. Not right now.

Haven't thought about that, as we don't eat out often.

But right now? In SF Chinatown? Likely not.

They are dying - this season has been terrible. They just don’t make headlines because it doesn’t sound like the plot to a movie.

I think I would send my kid and emphasize hand washing. There aren’t many cases in the Bay Area. Plus, worst case, most healthy people don’t die from this - it’s the elderly and already ill who actually die.
