Bowser says her daughter will probably attend Shepherd

But this is a good sign for DCPS and where it is headed.

+1 , Bowser knows how to get a headline. Notice that she said likely, which means when she back tracks and sends her child to parochial school, she’ll be able to say, “I never said definitely. Likely means that I considered the option but I’ve decided to explore the best option for my family.”

Not sure it was preplanned. A charter board member asked her the question. Bowser showed up and spoke during the public comment part of the meeting.

So by the time middle school rolls around she'll be done with politics and working for Pepco and be able to afford private school. Which will be $60K by then.

Or her daughter will be at Deal. None of us know.

You missed the point.

The fact Bowser is SAYING this - regardless of what she does in the future, is a good sign for DCPS. It’s an endorsement. What she says. Saying it is an endorsement.

PP, it’s cute that you consider Bowser’s maybe shrug as sign of hope and endorsement of DCPS schools.

DP. Perhaps you don't live in DC so don't know the significance, but in the past, if mayors used DC publics at all, it was WOTP. Yes, Shepherd is a Deal feeder, but I still think many DC families will see this as a vote of confidence in DC schools, particularly EOTP/majority minority DC schools.

I agree with first PP. You are penning too much hope and reading into it too much. I live EOTP and come on, I don’t see it as a vote of confidence for EOTP at all. It’s the politically correct thing to say. It doesn’t mean it’s definite. If it was, she would say so.

Oh wait, Shepherd isn’t moving to Wells? ?

Most families I know would never send their kids there but that was 10 years ago. Maybe it has gotten better but I haven’t first hand accounts. 10 years ago it had a more Georgia ave vibe than 16th street

I heard only about 50% of families or so do and they lose kids in the higher grades. So yea, I doubt she is going to send her child there.

Shepherd should move to Wells with the severe overcrowding at Deal. It’s a no brainer. Will have to wait and see....

No. Four other large schools feed Wells. It wasn’t planned to absorb Shepherd or anyone else. Its building is quite small.

Shepherd is only 53% in-boundary. I guess she'll have a few friends in the neighborhood.

PK3 and PK4 are 100% IB, with even IB families waitlisted at the time of lottery for PK3. Can't wait to see her at the PTA meetings

As more families stay in DC longer into school age, the charter system gets tighter to get into, and people are looking for a solid plan through MS and HS, we've seen a steady increase in IB numbers over the past several years at Shepherd.

Thanks for the input, Lafayette parent!

I don't think they lose any more these days than any other Deal feeders. That is to say, they don't lose many kids in the upper grades.
