Buying 2nd car used. Which is better? VW bug or Toyota small car?

It’s certified pre-owned with a a 100,000 mile powertrain warranty and life time guarantee on the engine. That’s a better warranty than you’d get with a new car and it was completely worth it for me to buy used.

Except other cars with more depreciation it is 12k off. My Cadillac CTS I bought used 20 months old with 5k miles. I got a bumper to bumper nine year warranty on car.

Depreciation is your friend in used cars. Powertrain and engine won’t go on a Camry I had one new in 1996 sold to neighbor in 2005 and he totaled it in 2012 still running.

CPO is worthless on a low mileage car in warranty. Better for off lease cars with 35k miles. Or a BMW with high maint.

While “Herbie” is cute - I can tell you that VW autos are definitely junk.

Always have been, always will be.

Toyota’s are the best cars to buy used.
Them and Honda’s retain value very well.

I saved about the same amount on my Toyota and bought from a private party. Buy a one owner vehicle from a person who has the title in hand and you should be fine. Also, there are some mechanics who can meet you at the person's house to do an inspection.

I doubt it is 6000 less. Provide the trim level, options and price you paid and we can figure out how much you really saved. Most likely you saved about 2k-3k at the most.

Because they hold their value so well that used ones are not that much less than a new one.

Honda civics and accords used to be like this as well.

Yes, this is very true. I also have found this to be true for Subaru vehicles. They simply have dropped so little in value in two or three years that it makes no sense to buy used when you can get brand new for slightly more. Also, people hold onto their Subarus, so there aren’t that many used ones out there to buy.

I've owned VW's, Audis (owned by VW), and Toyotas. Toyotas are slightly more reliable, but less fun driving-wise. VW's aren't garbage though -- anything in the last 10 years is way better than what people are remembering from the 80s. The Germans are pretty good at engineering cars after all. VW is in the top 3 largest car manufacturers in the world.

My Caddie is a 2011 Model and it has never ever had a repair. Not one single one. I have a nine year warranty up in a few months. I actually am doing college tours right now and in last few months drove to Pittsburg, Delaware, and Philly.

I owned a Toyota, Mercury, Fiat, Dodge, Pontiac, Subaru, Nissan, Chevy, GMC, Jeep, Mercedes and BMW over the years. My Caddie was first car ever to make it to year nine without a repair. I did change tires and brakes but that I am not counting.

My BMW was best driving by far. My Mercedes had most "look at me" was an SL convertible but money pit. My jeeps in snow I loved.

You buy cars at different times for different reasons. Honestly I want to move on from my Caddilac. But I have a policy not to dump cars that run great. I dumped my Camry at 9 years old and 38K miles as it was already starting to act up, motor mount broke, handle broke, seat belt had issue and timing belt was due.

Fiat was absolute worse. My dodge drove like a shopping cart, my Chevy had the pick up of a snail but rant great.

A corrola is a small box on wheels that runs good. But boring and small.

I bought it from Ourisman Fairfax. They have a used lot right next to the new car lot. They were very eager to make a deal and kept knocking money off every time I said I needed more time to decide. Highly recommend them.
