Unless you get a Suburban or Yukon XL - there will be no trunk space. Get a rooftop carrier or trailer hitch.

what if your other car fits 3 across, so you could do vacations in the second car and use the captains chairs car for everyday life?

Our family does all of the things referenced in this and every other thread comfortably with a mid size car.

Do you have a ski rack on your sedan? Otherwise you certainly do not put two adults and three kids with five sets of skis in a midsize car.

Funny you should ask as I grew up in Denver in a family of 5 that went skiing in a mid-size car - we had a Datsun station wagon. Putting the chains on was a PITA but we never had any trouble with the skis or everyone's bags.

We didn't want a minivan and the roof top carrier is a lifesaver. A little pain to pull out and put on sometime, but definitely worth it.

Skis should be in a rooftop carrier anyway, otherwise all the salt and other road crud gets on them.
