Plastic Bag Fee

The tax provides a funding stream to clean up the pollution. In theory, anyway. I don't know how the revenue will be allocated in DC.

We definitely need bottle/can deposits in DC. It would go a long way toward cleaning up the streets, while providing a small income for "volunteer sanitation workers", ie, homeless folks who would pick up trash for the deposit.

I support the bag tax in theory, but am really grumpy about having to store a pile of re-usable bags and having another routine cleaning task added to my already endless list. I used a bunch for a (vegetarian) grocery run yesterday and today noticed dog hairs on the bag bases that I must have picked up when resting the bags on the floor in my building's hallway or somewhere. Ick.

Anyone know of reusable bags that just wipe or rinse off when they probably don't need disinfecting? And where do I dry them-- must I spread them out all over my kitchen?

Waste of time!!! Bags don't pollute, people do.

Reusable bags carry germs, especially when raw meats / chicken placed in them, what next, no plastic wrap, paper on raw meats... no I have to wash them? that is a drain on the environment also..

Last week I bought a magazine at Border's near Friendship Heights. I think the clerk must have spent more than 5 cents of her time asking me if I needed a plastic bag. I didn't need the bag, but it got me wondering if clerks will be required to ask the question from now on for every transaction? Kind of like the monologue we hear at the post office about insurance, delivery confirmation, etc.

Another reason to shop in Virginia and Maryland.

MD has a bag bill of its own in the works. If you can manage to get through VA traffic in less time than it takes to answer a simple question, you must have a magic car!

And in Virginia, I believe they are still paying sales tax on food so you'll get dinged anyway.

No thanks. Enjoy your post-shopping Applebee's experience.

Are you saying there are on Applebees in Virginia and Maryland? You must be one of those simple minded DC residents, get over it.

Get over the suggestion that we have routine use for shopping in VA or MD.

I find the bag fee to be really annoying. My family is very frugal and energy minded. We always reused the bags. Now, we have to buy them. How does that save anything?

Saves nothing, total waste of money, another tax to us, the citizens of Washington, DC. Revolt, shop in Maryland and Virginia.

They should just do away with all plastic bags at the checkout counter. It might hurt at first but people will get used to it and eventually it will become the norm.

My husband had to pay 5 cents today at Filenes so he didn't have to carry around the underwear that he bought! He was annoyed, but said it was the best five cents he's ever spent. He would have left it in the store before carrying it under his arm for the whole world to see!
