Pottery Barn Delivery Surcharges Are Back!

Anonymous
I wanted a furniture item from West Elm (a Pottery Barn sister company). The shipping fee for a $500 item was $149. I found pretty much an identical item on All Modern for less money and free shipping. I know shipping is expensive, but I don't know how they can compete when other places offer it for free. I've had times where I will pick something out on PB but by the time shipping gets factored in I will change my mind and skip it.

Shoot me if it were to ever get to that point, please.

You sound poor.

Serious question: People still buy from Pottery Barn?

And where do you buy from?

Our PB couch was the worst couch we ever owned and it was not cheap! When I called them they said the useful life of their couch cushions was three years. They suck.

We have a lot of nice furniture and are currently having our entire first floor professionally redecorated. We are replacing our 15 year old PB sectional with another PB sectional with a more transitional silhouette. We have a lot of kids and the performance fabric has worn like iron. (But I did order in December before the surcharge was reinstated.)

Second the Belfort recommendation. My mil was a salesperson there before she retired so all our big ticket items are from there and have mostly held up better than our PB items.

Ups and fedex raised their rates on anything over 50lbs now. Is why you are seeing the surcharging.

Wait, is it 1992? It must be! Because we’re buying furniture from Pottery Barn!

Hello, Sears? I need a fridge.

As is the rest of their stuff. It looks nice but the quality isn’t there.

Sooo... where is everyone buying furniture from then? Furniture in the same plebian price range. Of course rich fancy pants people are buying expensive things from fancy pants places.

I don’t oppose pottery barn at all but I am looking around and there’s nothing from there in my comparably expensive house. Craigslist, suctions, wayfair/onekingslane, a few antique-y shops (like miss pixies or good wood), chairish, room and board, cb2...

Like I said though I don’t dislike pottery barn. Actually I totally have a Christmas platter from pottery barn that I love.

LOL! You probably believe you are right too!

Not the PP but yes Pottery Barn furniture is low quality with a high price tag. The furniture is cheap composite, engineered woods, P, a wood veneer that the has a pressed finish on top of it. MDF is also used on most pieces. When the furniture gets chipped you can see that what chips of is the pressed veneer layers exposing the soft cheaper wood underneath. It’s the same way ready to assemble furniture is produced and no different fromIkea except that Pottery Barn already assembles the furniture for you.

Independent furniture stores that sell stuff made of real wood, and made in America. And it's typically the same price as the cheaply made Chinese/3rd world stuff Pottery Barn sells. Their furniture constructions sucks-- both materials and workmanship.

For chains, Room and Board is the only one that manufactures good quality furniture domestically.
