Herndon middle and high school

Also a good idea to pull up Herndon stats and look at trends. What's been going up, down or remaining stable for the last ten years?

Pull up the PTA site and skim posts for the past few years.

Looks like the PTA was nonexistent for about 5-6 years and started up again this year.

Inactivity at all is bad and being inactive for years is a bad trend.

It starting up again is a good sign but too recent to be very reassuring.

Yes, the PTA is one of the first things the Ivies looks at... for admission.. They must have been sleeping on the recent apps.

If I were evaluating a school prior to moving in I would scratch Herndon off the list.

There are too many schools with better metrics.

Almost every school pyramid in Fairfax County has a tracked cohort of higher performing students who are challenged and challenge each other and have excellent college admissions stats to back it up including Herndon

That's all you need to know

Many people with the means to do so routinely avoid certain schools, or try them and then go private/move.

That's a "need to know".

"My kid isn't doomed if they attend any school in FCPS" is a good thing of course.

The school board has talked about having "courageous conversations" about some schools and whether there is flight from them.

Wonder how that's been going.

Where do you find out college admissions for Herndon students? Naviance is self reported.

The initial poster asked about Herndon specifically- with a mention that the other house they liked was in South Lakes-but they liked the Herndon zoned house better. So those were the two options- and they wanted info from people who had experience at Herndon. You said that there are too many schools with better metrics. They were talking about 2 schools specifically.
Herndon or South Lakes. I don't think there is much difference between those 2 choices - and I would go with the house in Herndon- based on what they said.
If they said South Lakes, Herndon or Madison- I would go with Madison..... but they didn't.

Good point.

I would go with the favored house and neighborhood I couldn't get enough feedback. A visit is also a good idea.

Both schools score above the Virginia Average and well above the US average.

As someone who has been in the area for many years, I would probably say South Lakes over Herndon. I know several SLHS families who were/are quite happy there.

According to this, no much difference between the 2

Parental disengagement is certainly a sign of a great school.

South Lakes has a slightly better overall profile- but it wouldn't be enough to sway me from the better house- if those were my two choices. The kids would seem to have equal opportunity. Herndon is an AP School and South Lakes is IB. I prefer the AP schools generally over IB.
