People do love Baliey's
...but most of those people live elsewhere and place into Bailey's through the lottery (either for Immersion or arts and sciences focus). The surrrounding area for which Bailey's is the base school is not somewhere most people would choose to live, and the schools it feeds into (Glasgow Middle and Jeb Stuart High School) are some of the roughest in the county. In Falls Church (fairfax county) , I would also recommend zip code 22043. Both Haycock and Shrevewood are great schools. |
There are many excellent FCPS in the area at the current time. After the current boundary realignments (to be decided in Feb.) that may no longer be the case. |
Can you elaborate on this? Are schools in the better districts going to be boundaried out? |
The redistircting is for schools in the western portion of the county. Primarily SUlly and Springfield district areas. |
The school district is doing a boundary study to deal with overcrowding in part of the district. They closed a school and instead of building another, they are adjusting boundaries and putting additions on existing schools. The result? Overcrowding at many schools instead of just a few (which was not good either). They need to build a new school and alleviate the overcrowding. Instead, they are looking at band-aids to the problem. Our neighborhood school, which was under capacity and we are FINE with taking on more kids, is now going to be over capacity in a poorly designed school that cannot accommodate the numbers. Kids will be going to lunch after 1st period. |
Seriously? I am blown away by how prejudice people are! Yes, Bailey's is located near low income apartments, but it is also borders on a neighborhood with million dollar homes. It is an amazing school. I know that parents are smart enough not to pick a school based on some random forum posts. If you are considering the school, contact the school for a tour, meet the principal, and see the children. And yes, I am a Bailey's parent who is doing the magent program--so I choose Bailey's for my children. |
If you want to keep your kids together, look at schools that are already AAP centers. Say you go to GBE, your oldest will qualify for the AAP center at GBW....but then your younger one will have to stay at GBE unless GBW is under capacity (it isn't), or your younger qualifies for the AAP program on her own.
FFX county just approved all day K for ALL of its schools. |
Welcome to Northern Virginia. Where great advice always comes with at least one snarky comment (21:06). |
I am also a single parent. my son attends Westgate ES and he loves it. the app center is Haycock. our zip is 22102. as a single parent, I am sure that you are having a lot on your plate. generally speaking, all schools in Fairfax county are pretty good. |
