Northam is more popular among African-American Virginians than white Virginians (and the same goes for AA vs white Democrats). People ask “what have you done for us lately?” more than focusing on stupid stuff someone did in their early 20s.

And there is the crux of Democrats belief in government, they believe that government is there to do something for them (selfish, entitled view) regardless of the person’s behavior and morals. Yes, stupid stuff in 20s followed up by lies and obfuscations in their later years. If Trump were a bleeding heart liberal, they’d love him and would excuse his boorish behavior.

Others believe government is there to primarily govern (make and enforce laws) and not to redistribute wealth. Instead they believe free markets governed by a set of rules that make the playing field as fair as possible should be the primary mechanism for determining financial success. I.e government doesn’t play in the game, but rather referees it.

Then there are those that want the rules rigged to help big business (also not good). Unfortunately the neutral governing government folks are getting squeezed out of the voting process by the quasi-socialists on the left and the rigged game quasi-autocrats on the right.
