Better buy: $40k new or gently used for half price?

This is really an apples and oranges comparison. It's not like you're comparing a new Buick Enclave with a gently used BMW X7. Different people different priorities. Somebody considering an Enclave would more likely consider an X7 rather than a convertible.

I'd go for 1/2 price, gently used in a second!

If you look at used car prices you'll see that's clearly not true. Used cars from reliable brands have great resale

Yeah I wish I could have gotten a 2 year old Honda Odyssey half off. 5 year old Odysseys were 25k. I got a 2020 Odyssey for 31k

BMWs are great, and if they are CPO, they have a warranty. They wouldn't have a problem for years. You don't know what you are talking about. I've had one, sometimes two, BMW continuously since 1992. The ones I chose to keep long term all easily passed 120-130 thousand miles with usual maintenance and some age-appropriate repairs (struts, window motor, etc.).

BMW is well known for being fun to drive not for being unreliable.

120k without major work is below industry standard. Most cars can easily hit 180k and lots make it to 200 or even 250k these days.

I never said it was dead at 120k, I said that's the longest I've kept one and it needed usual maintenance and some age appropriate repairs.

One just bought a $40k new Buick Enclave with all the bells and whistles and one just bought a 2018 BMW convertible with 15k mikes for $25k. They both think the other is crazy. Help us settle this.

I always buy a car that is 1-3 years old with low mileage. Somebody else can eat the depreciation for the joy of owning a new car.

I call BS. You actually can’t buy a fully loaded Enclave for anywhere near $40k.

So, taking the model of the cars out of the equation, is the consensus on here that you should buy new or you should buy used?

I would bet that bmw has been wrecked.

You really aren’t getting it. You can’t just take the model out of the question. The model matters. Reliability of used cars is the most important thing.

Both are fine. Very different choices.

My adult children and I all buy “gently used” used cars for about 65 cents on the dollar. Let someone else pay for the rapid depreciation as soon as it is driven off the lot. FWIW I can afford any car but I like good deals.

I agree the model matters. We tried to buy our Honda minivan used but the discount was so small we just bought new instead.
