The guild and shame of not purchasing the "recommended" hair products....

Pantene works well. It’s tried and true. But you have to switch it up from time to time to get that wow effect. Leave it and come back to it every now and then.

I hate businesses that make their employees put you in an uncomfortable position. It seems so short-sighted. Recently, while out of town for work, I went to an Ulta in a pinch bc i needed tweezers. The register person was ridiculously pushy about signing me up for rewards. I live in Adams Morgan and dont own a car; there is just not an ulta near me to make it worth it to get their rewards card so I repeatedly declined.

I mentioned this odd interaction to a younger colleague and she said a classmate of hers worked there and college. Apparently staffers are required to sign up a certain number of ppl for rewards cards and if they miss their mark they get fired, even if otherwise they are a good employee. That seems so ridiculous and short-sighted!! It makes want to avoid Ulta if that will be my experience each time I go there.

Right?

Op, just say no thank you. I don’t like the way they smell.

Is she just asking you one time or is she actually pressuring you? You mentioned that she recommended a color serum and you lost it... would she simply not let up? If so, then you could either 1) tell her it bothers you, 2) complain to her manager or 3) change salons.

My hairdresser simply says at the end, "do you need any products?" and I just say yes or no, and that's the end of it. There's nothing wrong with that.

The market is saturated with hair salons. Find a place where you feel comfortable.

My solution was circumstances, unrelated to the hard sell, caused me to change stylists, and I have someone who works out of her home and doesn't sell anything. It's wonderful! Which I know doesn't help OP and it's a tough spot to be in. You certainly could say something to management, but I'm assuming they're the ones who are pushing the hard sell. But I supposed they could have a choice between losing a regular customer or losing the sale of the products....

care to share??!

Agree that a polite, "No thanks" should be all that is needed.

I once had a rather pushy person who made it seem like I was being hair-negligent by not buying the recommended product, which got me ticked. I then said, "Well, if you feel it's absolutely necessary for me, then I guess I'll have to buy it. But that means I won't be able to give you a tip, since I'm on a budget." Amazing how quickly the product went back on the shelf.

That makes sense now. I went to an Ulta while in Oregon, and they did the same thing to me. I kept telling them I live in DC, nowhere near an Ulta. I was so annoyed....
