S/O Side Sitting at Restaurant

Obviously you can only do this when sitting at a rectangular 4 top table.
Like a PP, I too struggle to hear conversations when there is a lot of background noise. My preference is to request a square 4 top table so that I can sit adjacent, or kitty corner, from my spouse. That position allows me to sit with my best ear next to my partner.

We only do it if there is a special view we both want to share. Otherwise we actually prefer to be caddy corner as sometimes the tables are too large to sit across from one another and chat quietly.

We do it sometimes. It really depends on the layout of the restaurant as well as the occasion. Sometimes we're feeling schmoopy so we want to be close.

If it’s a sports bar and we’re there to see a game, we do it. Otherwise no.

This is why I like sitting at the bar. Close to each other without being weird.

I saw a 20/20 or similar show many years ago that did a study on sitting next to each other vs across from each other. They had kids of various ages and gender mixes come into a room and move the chairs wherever they wanted. The girls always moved the chairs so they were across from each other and the boys moved them so they were next to each other. I think the theory was girls like eye contact more than boys.

My 5 year old son loves to sit next to me in a restaurant. It's sweet.

I do this if something is on the bar TV that we both want to watch. Otherwise, big no. It just seems awkward.

Depends on the view from the table.
And depends on how loud the restaurant is; I have a hearing issue so sometimes can't hear in super loud places.

Not everyone does this to be affectionate during the meal.

If it is a square table then sometimes sitting on the two sides closest to each other rather than across from each other works best.

But if it is two across from two then that is weird to sit on the same side of a booth or rectangular table together.

I only do this if the restaurant is loud.

My partner has complete hearing loss in one ear. Add to this the usual restaraunt noise, and we are much better off when sitting side by side, me next to his good ear.

I do it to be affectionate with my mate. I still love him and unlike much of DCUM we still like and touch each other so this isn’t awkward or weird.

Interesting! Wonder if subsequent studies have verified this?

I've only done it if it is a booth, usually a 4-6 top and just the two of us. Otherwise prefer to sit across from one another.
