Big houses are overrated. Too much work and maintenance. Buy a smaller home with a good floor plan in FCC closer to metro with the better school, and you and your children will be happier.

Your mileage may vary. Old houses aren't always well-maintained, and the lots in FCC are often small. That might be less of a consideration in Arlington, which is more walkable and has better parks. Renters should be particularly cautious in FCC; there are a lot of single-family homes with significant problems that are rented out by lazy landlords. Neither children nor their parents are too happy to end up in a tiny house that's infested.
