S/O: How many gifts do your kids get for Christmas?

LOL! What do you think DCUM is? You can say that literally about every thread.

Few, but their education is expensive!

We have 2 young kids. No set number but try to keep it small: a couple new books and 1-3 toys each (last year my son got one toy from us: a big, nice ($$) dump truck but my daughter got a couple things because hers were smaller). They also get a stocking w edible goodies plus some arts/crafts thing (markers/crayons, play doh, stickers.) and they each get probably 10-15 other gifts from extended family and family friends. We also renew our zoo membership and children’s museum membership at Christmas time so I think of those as gifts too though our children are too young to understand that.

Too much. But nothing is very expensive. Like they don’t get electronics and $80-100 toys. It’s smaller things—some that they need (clothes, pajamas, boots), some books, a few toys or games, art supplies. My dh grew up with a lot to open under the tree so that’s important to him.

Growing up, my mom used to load the couch and the floor below full of gifts. From hot ticket items (Nintendo NES!) to small useful “things” (cookies, hair bands, brushes, favorite soda) to clothes to books. So much stuff.

I feel this pull to do the same for mine, even though I know it’s excessive and ridiculous. So far I’ve not gone that far, even though I remember what it felt like to walk out and see that couch. But my kid doesn’t NEED that stuff and neither did I, frankly.

We usually get one big thing (bike, American Girl set, this year, roller blades.) some books, pajamas, art supplies, and little toys (LOL, blind bags) in stocking. Maybe 15 actual things to open.

About 7-9 each from Santa.

Don't they also get tons of gifts from grandparents, other family, etc.? How many presents total are they opening?

I spoil the crap out of my kid on Christmas. Not sure the number but we are opening gifts all morning. It’s magical.

We do have about $1k budget we stick to.

My kids get a lot compared to others on DCUM, apparently. We basically only do gifts for Christmas & birthday. Their “fun” gifts are not expensive. They get a few toys but also things like used books, snow boots, clothes they needed anyway, or something they need for their sport.

Similar. They also get very little from family. Grandparents all dead and DH siblings don’t exchange gifts. My brother will spoil them with a big wow gift but that’s about it.

We do Christmas all together with extended family (only really have it on one side). Kids get about 6 gifts from extended family and usually 2 from us on Christmas Day. We also give them one Christmas Eve gift. I don't give them clothes as gifts - that is separate.

As I said, from us, about 15 things. Maybe 10 more between the grandparents, but they usually buy clothes, books, or other consumables.

We are also quality over quantity, which admittedly gets easier and more rewarding as the kids get older. One "big" thing, 2-3 smaller ones and a stocking, which is plenty. The big thing used to be a toy or similar, but as they are getting older, it goes up in price (they got bikes one year, Universal trip another, phones last year, this year will probably be another trip, plus Broadway tickets in their stockings). There are also gifts from overesas grandparents and aunt under the tree (one each), and we usually spend X-mas with ILs, so that is another 3-4 gifts, so they have plenty to open.

We also do:

Something they want
Something they need
Something to wear
Something to read

They also get a big gift (sometimes experience or electronics) and something from each aunt/uncle (3 total).

A stocking plus 2-4 Santa gifts, then 3-4 from us. Then their grandparents/aunts/uncles.
