Westfield Montgomery is slated to have a major expansion with includes residential in the old Sears area. It has been put on hold due to a lack of school capacity. Other parts of the expansion like a health club are also on hold till the residential is there to support it.

Crown's projected opening is now 2025. Wootton's 2026.

I don’t understand that answer. RM was taken off the list because Crown is supposedly going to alleviate some of the overcrowding at RM. isn’t Crown also going to help with overcrowding at Wooton?

I am guessing to will protect Wootton from Crown rezoning...

MCPS put Wootton in the CIP to protect Wootton from Crown rezoning? That makes no sense.

Wootton is not going to Crown. Crown builders have been pushing that since day one. Great marketing.... Could some Wootton students be rezoned, sure but highly unlikely to Gaithersburgh HS.

What? No one from Wootton is going to Crown...but Wootton students could be rezoned...but not to Gaithersburg. You are saying Wootton could only be rezoned to RM? Why would Crown bulldikers be pushing Wootton when they are getting their own HS?

Crown is listed in the chapters for RM, QO, Gaithersburg, Wootton, and Northwest. I believe the Wootton project is more about the physical state of their building itself, rather than its capacity.

How can WJ kids be rezoned to Wootton? Perhaps Woodward when that reopens, but not Wootton. Westfield is almost in walking distance to WJ, which is currently over capacity, so the delay is probably to allow Woodward to reopen and boundaries to be redrawn accordingly.

Westfield is also near Churchill boundaries but no renovations have been approved there and Churchill is overcapacity. Woodward and WJ are more logical schools for when the new residential areas are built.

The CIP has a feasibility study for a Churchill addition.

Wootton is no where near WJ, and transportation costs would be factored. Also, they don’t care if people are angry. People are always angry. When they build Crown all the schools and feeders for RM, NWHS, QOHS, GHS, and WHS will be assessed, so WJHS won’t be part of the process at all.

This post doesn’t make sense. Some kids from the area near Rio go to Wootton. They absolutely could rezone. There have been some weird zones upcounty over the years from attempts to deal with demographics. Everyone fully expects some redistricting of Wootton students because each of the 5 schools is several hundred kids over capacity, so one 2000 kid school can relieve all of them. There are islands of zoning all over the place. When they do the Crown study, all sorts of things can happen.

Wootton is under capacity now, and its population is projected to keep falling, not growing.

That’s interesting. The previous projections had it over I guess because of the planned development mentioned and also because if the pending Rachel Carson study. In any case, there have been mentioned many times that Wootton will be in the Crown study. Much of what happens probably depends on Dufief and also those units near Rio.

I think that these HS projects need to be looked at as a whole, across the county, not each one in isolation. And everyone should consider that at a minimum they will also be looking at MS allocations (like the Seneca Valley study).

Sept 2025 - new or expanded, with adjacent clusters
Northwood - DCC (Einstein, Wheaton, Blair, Kennedy)
Woodward - Walter Johnson, DCC
Crown - Gaithersburg, Quince Orchard, Wootton, Richard Montgomery
Damascus - Clarksburg, Gaithersburg, Sherwood

2024 Poolesville - Northwest, Clarksburg
2026 Wootton - QO, RM, Northwest, Churchill
2027 Magruder - Gaithersburg, RM, Rockville, Sherwook, NEC

The only schools not directly adjacent to the above are Whitman, BCC, and Watkins Mill, but there is no reason to think they can't be considered. With two new high schools and two additions, they are adding ~6000 seats in HS in 2025. Effectively, the entire county will be affected. This is why they need the boundary analysis study.

Agree with this. Northwest is also supposed to be part of the Crown study.

• Poolesville High School—September 2024
• Damascus High School—September 2025
• Thomas S. Wootton High School—September 2026
• Col. Zadok Magruder High School—September 2027

Are monies for these projects tied to meeting baseline desegregation targets?
