MCPS Considering Beginning 2020-21 School Calendar Year Before Labor Day

Definitely before Labor Day. School days post Memorial Day are a joke. Most kids are checked out.

Perfect situation would be a start date the second week of August and an end date right before Memorial Day. A lot of the country already does this.

School should could be open the whole time to provide free child care, meals and supplemental education
for underprivileged or kids who struggle.

That way those who don't need as much schooling or want their kids to enjoy the summer because they
are doing just fine at school would not need to be subjected to one size fits all.

Why?

Kids are checked out the last few weeks of school no matter when they fall. Memorial Day has nothing to do with it.

Can’t they just pick one thing and be consistent? Enough already! Neither one is inherently better or worse. Make a choice, MCPS.

No, they couldn't. They used to start before Labor Day, but then the governor issued an executive order saying they weren't allowed to do that. Then the General Assembly passed a law saying they could if they wanted to. So now they're thinking about whether they want to.

Given how late Labor Day is next week, I’d like them to start one week earlier than the proposed dates. Aug 24 Or 25 would be my ideal.

Oops next year - not next week

+1 this wasn’t in their control.

Memorial Day has a lot to do with it. AP exams are the first two weeks of May. State testing is the following week. Memorial Day comes next. Kids are DONE by then.

Can we have a much earlier start time for elementary? I prefer early start time early end time. I dont care when they start the school year but, be consistent.

I would like them to return to the before Labor Day start. Sept 8 is just too late.

When will they finally decide? We're planning our vacation in August but can't buy tickets until we know when school will start.

The reason for the late start (my kid's ES starts at 9:05am) is so high school kids don't have such an early start. They use the same buses for all.

Should be voted on at the Nov. 12th meeting. If they don't decide then, the next meeting is Dec. 3rd.
