Most nannies make between $15 and 25/hour.

Where do you live, Richmond?

Less than $15, even if a teen, in this area is way too low.

Wrong. If they want to charge more, they are free to do so.

Just because you say this doesn’t make you right. I was always too shy to ask for a higher rate but I always felt a higher rate than what I’d been paid would be more fair. Ensure they want to sit for you!

Rates vary depending on which part of NOVA. I’m in Falls Church near Vienna and we pay a neighborhood teen $10/hr. I’d pay a teen further away $12 or an adult $20. Closer in, it’s probably more like $12-15 to start, and higher for adults depending on qualifications.

(They don't have to buy any of their clothes, pay for their phones or their gas, etc.) They don't "need" the money - its purely discretionary. The upside to this is that they don't have a clue what they should charge! And don't really seem to care! Most of them say "whatever you pay is fine!"

I pay them $12/hour and never seem to have any trouble getting them to come back.

$12 for three kids seems cheap. I pay $10 but for one kid who is asleep.

My DD (junior in HS) charges $25 and she limits herself to babysitting two evenings a month. (4 APs and a Varsity sport.). She sits for five different families is booked out until Christmas and has an actual waiting list on a Google Doc. She saves everything since she has a pretty low-key style and tastes.

It’s insane in DC.

You are ridiculous. If they feel it's too low they don't have to come back. We have plenty of teenagers around my neighborhood that are happy to do it for $10/hr.

$12 per hour....??!

This shows what type of parent you are.
One who does not place value in their child’s care.

Wait until the day the tables are turned.
When you are old and your child hires the cheapest caregiver for you to be cheap.

And you realize a tad too late how little they value YOU.

$15-17 hr for high schooler, $20hr for adult. We also tip if it’s a later night or long stretch of time.
