Bugs in Pistachios

Anonymous
Here because I just found a worm in my pistachio. I thought the outside looked a bit fuzzy, but it was a new bag so I thought it wasn't mold and was just something odd since I don't eat pistachios that often. I bit into it and the top half separated and I ate that, but in the bottom half I saw a larvae!! So gross. Apparently the fuzzy stuff was it's cocoon or something. It was dead though (or if it wasn't, it definitely is now).

You probably don’t want to find out then what’s in your ground coffee, wheat, and spices.

I opened this thread to post this story and realized I posted it five years ago. Still don’t eat pistachios except in baked goods or ice cream!

Ugh I'm so disgusted. I googled it and apparently it is very very common to find bugs in pistachios. I love them and feel they are ruined for me now. I know bugs are in foods but this was a new level of gross.

There are bug eggs in almost every food you eat, unless it is so laden with toxic chemicals that it kills the eggs.

That's why many freeze things to kill eggs for long term storage, or package in Nitrogen, etc.

I put all my dried fruit, nuts, rices, flours, oats in a glass or metal container for a month before using. Then I do a water test to see if bugs present.
Sitting in glass or metal keeps it from spreading if it is infested.

I remember popping popcorn in a pan and seeing little bugs popping alongside the kernels. They must have been buried in the kernels and came out when the heat increased.

I have seen weevils in hot cereals.

Bugs happen!

Bugs are common in everything you eat. Each of us eat about 2lbs of bugs (live, dead, and in between) per year. Just check before you eat.

This would be a gross moment but I would just move on. There are bugs everywhere.

I can’t imagine being so prissy about this. You stopped eating pistachios because you found a bug in one? Don’t you understand that all the food you eat is potentially food for bugs? They are not going to hurt you..

This was a week after I opened a bag of currants I'd apparently had longer than I realized, no bugs but there was some webby stuff which tells you there's an infestation.

MOST dry food has bug eggs hiding and if it goes too long the eggs hatch.

You have pantry moths

I haven't been able to eat dates, or anything with dates in it (many energy bars!), since.

Oh, I feel so spoiled… but I just experienced this. After finally getting over a lifetime of thinking dates look like roaches. And I know our ground flour is full of bugs. I’m just fooling myself.

I was just thinking the same thing.

I think I’m having a weight loss breakthrough as a result of this thread!
