The speed limit in most parts of DC is 25 mph. You have to be driving 36 mph to trigger a speeding ticket. If you are driving 36 mph you are not going to be able to stop on time for pedestrians who are trying to cross crosswalks. So as a pedestrian in DC I support anything that makes people slow down a modicum and have to acknowledge that there are other people using the roads who are not protected by steel cages. As a dc tax payer whose tax dollars go towards maintaining the roads I will also absolutely take any additional revenue genrerated, even if a cut goes to corporations running the cameras. If you don’t like it then you don’t have to drive in DC. |
Found 3 studies. One said less safe (Houston study). One said no effect (Phoenix). One said more safe--but that was in Brussels. |
It's always seemed to me that traffic cameras were unsafe. I think they prompt an instinct to take your eyes off the road to check the spedometer and/or to hit the brakes, both of which could potentially be hazardous. On the other hand, the displays set beside the road that tell you what your speed is and flash if you're speeding seem to be a much safer way to discourage speeding - but they don't generate income. |
Say it isn't so. . . I'd be completely lost without Google Maps directng me where to turn. In fact, the times when my cell dropped the signal, I was completely lost without it. |
Red light cameras increase non-injury rear-end collisions and decrease injury T-bone collisions. That sounds good to me. If you don't want to pay a red light ticket, don't run red lights. |
Not if you don't speed. So just make it a habit to not speed. Then you don't have to worry about speed cameras. |
When did Google maps add scooters to pedestrian directions? SCOOTERSISTS ARE NOT PEDESTRIANS. How the hell do I remove this option??
|
I don't see any scooters in the pedestrian directions. |
They were definitely there on Saturday. Maybe there are no scooters near you at the moment. I hate it - if I want to walk, I want to walk - I don't want to see a scooter option under "walking." |
PP you're responding to. No, I asked for directions where there are scooters. Plus, if you didn't want to use a scooter, all you would have to do is disregard the scooter option? |
Speeding drivers who don’t leave safe distances between them and the car in front of them increase rear end collisions. New trick for you: drive safely. You don’t need to hit the brakes in front of a camera if you’re not speeding. If someone does that in front of you then you should have enough time to stop. |
Also, if you are driving then your eyes should be constantly scanning anyway- scam to the left looking for pedestrians and bikes, scan to the right to look for cars that might be turning or merging, scan ahead to make sure you aren’t too close to the car ahead of you, scan to dashboard to check speed, etc. If you are looking ahead the whole time and only pay attention you your surroundings when you see a speed camera then you are a bad driver and should take some drivers ed classes |
Google is partnering with Lime. So maybe not all scooter brands, but it is expanding. And it's awful. It would be one thing if it offered a scooter tab (like it does with cars, public transportation, etc) but it overlaps suggested scooter routes with walking routes at the same time, and it's definitely obnoxious. Scooters are closer to bikes than walking and should not be in the same category as a pedestrian. |
Seriously? You ACTUALLY said that? You have anger issues it seems. -np |
Agreed. I’m looking for bike lanes when on a scooter. |
