OP, the term "Hispanic" describes so many countries and cultures. I think you need to narrow down your commentary to the particularly culture you are referencing -- poor immigrants from El Salvador. I think there may be a big difference between their cultural practice, and say, sophisticated urban dwellers from Buenos Aires.
I mean, your comment is really way overbroad and simplistic. |

So here I am, pleased about having gained some new knowledge, and you think it's a great opportunity to point out how stupid I still am. Nice.
I'm not sure what you're trying to prove. Are you so much smarter than me because you're able to point out that city folk are different from rural folk? Educated/illiterate, and rural/urban are not easily observable facts. Hispanic is. Totally covered baby stroller is. I'm working with what I observed, and I remain pleased to have learned the reason behind it. Unlike some, I don't need to pretend I already know everything there is to know; I'm not too good for new information, and I don't need to point out glaringly obvious points just to jump into a discussion where I have no actual expertise. |

OP, don't let that poster get to you, I understood what you meant.
Signed, my children are Hispanic (and I don't cover them up) but I don't resent your post. |
Actually, Hispanic people are not easily observable because they can be any race -- white, black, etc. Wow! Now you've learned something else new! Sheesh. If someone had posted the same post and, say, had written "African American cultural practice", or "Caucasian American" etc., then maybe you would have understood why it's racist. - an hispanic poster, not easily "labeled" hispanic |

You clearly have a very painful chip on your shoulder, and have decided to deliberately misconstrue anything said here. I could perhaps have spent a little longer wordsmithing each post, (perhaps "in my neighborhood hispanic is an observable fact" - because they're speaking spanish, for starters, and because where I live, the Guatemalan and Salvadoran communities make up a near-majority of the population) but it seems that you're the only reader having trouble with my meaning here, so I think I won't bother.

And here I thought this post was going to be about 14 and 15 year olds deciding to have babies just so their parents would accept their boyfriends. And hey, the plan worked!

You know what, OP? This isn't Second Grade, where you get up in front of the class for Show 'n Tell and say "Guess what I learned?! Hispanic people are really cool and cover their babies cuz they are afraid of the evil eye and stuff!" And everyone goes "Woooooooow" and Ms. Jenkins says "Thanks Madison. Class, everyone tell Madison how smart she is." I'm afraid those years of your life are over. You will need to accept that. |
| Some of us hope to always be learning. Otherwise, we risk becoming all cranky and solidified in our (potentially wrong-headed) thinking. Nothing makes my day like new information! |
| What I find incredible, OP, is that after all this, you continue to think you "gained some new knowledge" today. You heard one person's opinion and you (or that person) overgeneralized to an entire culture. That's called a s-t-e-r-e-o-t-y-p-e. I'm hispanic. The women in my family routinely overdress their children, in my opinion. It has absolutely nothing to do with any "evil eye." |
Hey, moron, maybe you should try complaining to the Washington Post, not the OP, since the reporter who wrote the article was the one that made that particular "racist" characterization? |
"After all this"? You think that the harranguing of one angry (maybe) hispanic person is more weighty than something published in The Washington Post? |
Noooooo....the WP article reported the behavior of one person. OP generalized it to an entire ethnicity. THAT'S RACISM. |
| You know, that "racism" charge loses impact every time you use it. I think it's a corrollary of Godwin's Law. |
I'm from south america and we dont cover our babies... but I DO BELIEVE in evil eye.

| OP can you post the link to the original article? |
