College "Junk" Mail

Anonymous
In the last few weeks, our house has started receiving college junk mail addressed to someone who doesn't live here. We've lived here for 13 years and have never gotten any mail addressed to this name before. Is there anything we can do to turn off the flood of mail? Four pieces came just today.

Endure for hopefully, there's light at the end of the tunnel - when my kid went off to college, ALL the mailings magically stopped

Yep. After kid 1 and all the dead trees told DD that under no circumstances should she check the box agreeing to have your data sold (it is something you opt in to). Now, if she is interested in a college, she just requests to be contacted the school. Now, she gets,2-3 mailings a week from colleges that are appropriate and not everything from Yale to Florida petroleum institute. She wants SLACs. She’s signed up with about 12-15. More than that is just killing trees.

It’s a much nicer system. The stuff my older kid would have wanted got lost in the crap.

I don’t get why people don’t remember this from when were in high school. I was in high school in the last 80s and everyone got the mail deluge starting in junior year.

College Board sells the names to colleges with the kid’s year. Not magic.

The SAT sold her data. No request needed.

When you sit the SAT, I believe there’s a place where you can indicate whether colleges can contact you. One of my kids said « no », and received very little. The other one said « yes », and received tons.

This. If you check no on the PSAT and SAT, they won't send you much mail.

Nothing against Va. Wesleyan but by daughter laughed at the most recent brochure (one of at least 3 I think so far) where they depicted a college student laying on the beach studying with 3 large textbooks. Like anyone could get serious studying done while laying on the beach - LOL.

Clearly you haven't studied at U-Miami, UCLA or Va Weslyan.

I went to school in FL and I can assure you my friends and I studied at the beach all the time. Seriously.

Bumping. Does anyone have ideas for how to get an incorrect addressee off the mailing lists? We can't log into her account to opt out because we're not her!
